Arnold E. Steines, 93, Marshfield, died on Monday, July 15, 2013 at House of the Dove, Marshfield.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, July 19, 2013 at St. John's Catholic Church with Rev. Samuel Martin officiating. Burial will take place in St. Andrew's Cemetery, Rozellville, where military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 54 of Marshfield. Serving as pallbearers will be grandchildren, Zachary, Gabriel, and Rudy Janke, Cody Steines, Karl Berkemeier and Renee Steines Habeh. The visitation will be held on Friday from 9:00 am until service time at St. John's Catholic Church. Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Arnold was born on December 7, 1919 in the Town of Cleveland to Joseph and Josephine (Ulwelling) Steines. He attended St. Joseph's Parochial School, Stratford and was a graduate of Stratford High School. He married Bernadine E. Hennes on August 11, 1941 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Rozellville. She died on June 30, 2004.
Arnie was employed at the Stratford Post Office and Mosinee Paper Mill before entering the United States Army
Air Forces in October of 1943. He served 30 months in the Air Transport command in North America during World War II
. After his honorable discharge he worked as post office clerk and rural letter carrier in Stratford until retiring in November of 1980 with over 40 years of government service.
He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Knights of Columbus John Eisen Council #1799, and the American Legion Post 54. He spent 10 years playing semi pro baseball with Stratford, Mosinee, Owen and Loyal clubs. In 1943, Arnie pitched a perfect no-hit, no-run, no-walk, no-error game for the Halder Club. While serving in North America, Arnie pitched baseball for Casablanca Air Trancos, taking the championship of the Casablanca All Service League and the North Africa Division.
Arnold is survived by 9 children, Ardell (Elaine) Steines of Mosinee, Berna Jo (Danne) Mellenthin of Colby, Philip (Nadine) Steines of Spring Valley, IL, Noreen (Joseph) Holthaus of Alexandria, VA, Mary Rose (Tom Berkemeier) Steines of Jackson, MI, Geriann (Tom) Stanley of Rockville, MD, Jolene (Steven) Janke of Humbird, Nick (Kendra) Steines of International Falls, MN and Ted (Julie) Steines of Auburndale. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a son, Joseph, in infancy.
