Dale I. Hanson
Dale I. Hanson, age 77, of Stevens Point, WI died at his home March 14, 2013. He had been ill since 2007.
Dale was born in a log cabin in Sawyer County, WI on February 17, 1936 when it was 40 degrees below zero. He was the oldest son of the late Irving Hanson and Della Bjelland.
He attended a one room grade school near Exeland, WI. He attended Bruce High School graduating in 1954. He was motivated and determined to go on to college. Dale had a $40 scholarship to the University of WI in Madison. He hitchhiked there and was dropped off in the middle of State Street. He went to a local restaurant and the owner gave him a job sweeping floors and cleaning, in trade for room and board above the restaurant.
Dale married Donna Loskot October 19, 1963 at the First Presbyterian Church in Edgar, WI.
He attended the University for three years before being drafted into the US Army August 18, 1958. After basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Dale was assigned duty at Ft. Bragg, NC as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne. During his time of service Dale often traveled to Washington DC to be a part of the Honor Guard at Arlington National Cemetery. Towards the end of his time of service, Dale was able to finish his college degree in mechanical engineering, graduating in January of 1962. He was honorably discharged on February 28, 1962.
Dale worked for Wisconsin Public Service Corp. for 35 years. He moved around the company's territory, living in Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Two Rivers, Oshkosh, Green Bay and then Stevens Point in 1974. He retired in 1997. He was active in the Professional Society of Engineers during his career. The society recognized him as an outstanding Professional Engineer in Industry on April 12, 1991.
Dale enjoyed making tramp art. He would cut narrow strips of wood and weave them together without using any glue. He made over 50 picture frames, clocks and lamps giving them to friends, relatives and museums.
Dale is survived by his wife of 49 years, Donna; children Keith (Tracy) of Hilliard, OH, Chris (Stacie) of Yakima, WA, and Nora Stewart (Corey) of Sitka, AK; grandchildren, Thor Becker and Allen Madigan of Sitka, AK; and Alayna, Bryce and Camden Hanson of Hilliard, OH. He is also survived by his sister, Carol (Terry) of Superior, WI; and brother, Michael (Patty) of Marinette, WI.
He is preceded in death by his parents and by his in-laws Loddie and Dorothy (Erickson) Loskot.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 am, Friday, March 22, 2013 at Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church with Rev. Susan Zencka officiating. Visitation will precede the service at the church from 9:30 am until time of the service. Burial will take place in Forest Cemetery at a later date.
