Travis, Dale "Curly' Emery

1918 - 2013

Dale Emery Travis of Stevens Point, WI, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield, WI, at the age of 94.

Dale or "Curly" as he was known to his many friends was born on December 28, 1918, in Mobridge, SD, to LeRoy and Lucinda (Charles) Travis. Dale and his brother, Roland were raised by his mother and grandmother after his father passed away in February 1920. Dale grew up in Mobridge. In his youth, Dale worked at Truax and Travis grocery store and his uncle's hardware store. Dale had also traveled to Kiel, WI, for a summer to work on his uncle's farm. After high school he became a route salesman for Eddy's Bakery. It was during this time that he met Doris E. Hiatt. They were married on April 12, 1941. Dale served in the Army Air Force during WWII. While stationed in California, he was a member of the Army Air Force basketball team that played a game against the Harlem Globetrotters and the inmates at San Quentin prison. He said "the inmates didn't play fair." After his discharge he managed Gamer's restaurant in Helena, MT. He later joined the Swift & Company. After that he worked for the Piggly Wiggly Corporation eventually retiring as a Regional Vice President in 1983. Dale was instrumental in the expansion of Piggly Wiggly grocery stores in the Midwest. Dale opened two business's locally, "The Laundry" (1980) and "Spirits of Plover"(1983). Dale was an original investor in The Pineries Bank where he was known as the "Grounds Keeper". Each morning he would empty the coffee grounds, make new coffee, and visit with the customers. Dale was always there to help family and friends whenever needed. Dale loved animals, yard work, and morning breakfasts and afternoon coffee with friends. He had a knack for fixing things, or as he called it, "field modifications." Dale was a life member of the Evergreen chapter of the Masonic Lodge. Dale will be deeply missed for his love, quick wit and sense of humor.

He is survived by his son, Larry Travis and his wife, Grace; his son, James Travis; granddaughter, Lisa (Travis) Bishop, her husband, Jeff, and their two children, Taylor and Brendan; granddaughter, Laurie (Larsen) Jordan and her husband, Jeff; granddaughter, Kristen (Travis) Schoenbrunn, her husband, Mark, and their two children, Luke and Heidi; grandson, David Larsen and his wife, Denise; niece, Dr. Mary Ann Travis; son-in-law, Roderick Larsen; and his two beloved cats, Fric and Frac.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Doris; daughter, Susan E. Larsen; and brother, Roland Travis.

In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the or the Masonic Evergreen Lodge #93, 1578 Strongs Ave, Stevens Point, WI 54481.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Masonic Lodge, 1578 Strongs Ave, Stevens Point, WI at 10:30 am. Family visitation begins at 10:00 am.

A very special heartfelt thank you from Dale's family and friends to the caregivers, who over the years, showed kindness and compassion in taking special care of Dale.
