Don Schmeeckle

Schmeeckle, Don Fred

Don Fred Schmeeckle 88, Denver, N.C. went home to his heavenly Father on Monday, June 3, 2013, after a long and dramatic decline in health following a cerebral hemorrhage in June of 2000.

Don was born in Stevens Point, Wis. on Nov. 16, 1924, the son of Frederick Jacob Schmeeckle and Winifred Webb Schmeeckle. He was also predeceased by his first wife, Esther Marion "Tootsie" Miller Schmeeckle in 1959. Don graduated as an honor student from P.J. Jacobs High School, Stevens Point, in 1942. He attended the Univ. of Wisconsin (Madison) for several semesters before being selected for the U.S. Army Air Corps pilot training program. He served in the Corps from 1943 through 1945. He then returned to Univ. Wisconsin completing his BS degree in electrical engineering in 1949.

In his first career, Don was in charge of plant engineering for the Whiting- Plover Paper Company of Steven's Point. In his second career beginning in 1967, Don accepted a position with the Bechtel Corporation, Power & Light Division, headquartered in Gaithersburg, Md. He was assigned by Bechtel to work at many nuclear power plants throughout the U.S. before retiring in 1991.

He was introduced to his second wife, Dorothy "Dottie" Glace, also widowed, on a blind date in 1987. They retired to Beaufort S.C., in 1991 and began renovating an older home on the Intra Coastal Waterway. Don did all of the plumbing and electrical work himself to bring the home up to a rigorous code level. Don claimed that he had "pushed enough paperwork" in his lifetime and now he wanted to see if he could actually perform the tasks. Don's favorite hobby was working on an old Rolls Royce he purchased and ultimately gave to his daughter, and tooling around in a new Maserati he purchased in 1987. He also enjoyed hunting and was labeled a terrific shot by his old Wisconsin friends.

While living in Beaufort, Don and Dottie entertained for the Beaufort Open Land Trust, the Beaufort Arts Council and a Beaufort Memorial Hospital Ball. Don and his wife were also very active members of St. John's Lutheran Church in Beaufort.

In 2007, they reluctantly relocated to Denver, N.C., as Don's physical condition required additional care and family support. In 2012, Don was placed in Abernethy Laurels Skilled Nursing Unit, Newton, N.C., where he lived until his death.

In addition to his devoted wife of the home address in Denver, N.C., Don is survived by his adoring step-children, Amy Glace Murray (Ben) and grandson Tyler "Murr" Murray, of Denver, N.C.; and Peter Glace (Kelly Lee), Reardan, Wash. He is also survived by children from his first marriage; a son, David "Stan" H. Schmeeckle (Audrey) and their children, Elena Schneiderman (Kory) with two great-grandchildren, Illyana and Drew; Atty. Daniel F. Schmeeckle (Mikayla) and Ms. Anissa Schmeeckle all of Stevens Point, Wis. Also, his son, Joseph F. Schmeeckle (Angel Nieves) and their children, Kayla and Jacob, all of Maui, Hawaii; and his daughter, Sarah Davis Rojas also of Maui, and her children, Ms. Franchesca "Chessie" Davis and Eric R. Davis, both of Silver Spring, Md. Don is also survived by his only sibling, Mrs. Wilma Watersteet (Eugene), Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; and by many much loved nieces and nephews.

Friends are cordially invited to celebrate Don's life at a Memorial Service to be held at Community in Christ Lutheran Church at 7621 Norman Lake Drive, Cornelius, NC 28031 on Thursday, June 6, at 3 p.m. Following the service friends and neighbors are warmly invited to return to the family home at 7675 Bermuda Hills Drive, Denver, for visiting and a light supper.
