Betker, Ernest

Ernest Betker, 88, of Shantytown, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at the Portage County Health Care Center, while under the care of Ministry Hospice Services.

Ernest was born on July 14, 1924, in the town of Alban, to the late Victor and Marcianne (Cychosz) Betker. His marriage to the love of his life, Apolonia "Pauline" Wierzba, took place on Aug. 23, 1947, at St. Ladislaus Catholic Church in Bevent.

The couple lived in Milwaukee for a time, where he worked at Maynard Steel and Phister-Vogul. They later moved to Shantytown, in 1954, and began farming, during which time he also worked at Leo Hoppa Jr.'s Aluminum Foundry and Consolidated Construction. Together, he and Apolonia farmed until 1994, when they retired and their son, Daniel, took over the family farm. They continued to live nearby, enjoying his hobbies, which included woodworking and caring for the vegetable and flower garden with Apolonia; and playing cards.

Ernest is survived by son, Daniel (Rita) Betker; daughters, Lorraine (Paul) Theisen, Carol (John) Wojcik, Diane Pliska and Janice Laskowski; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Apolonia; infant son, Ronnie; son-in-law, Thomas Laskowski; and siblings, Ben, Hubert, Ray, Leo, Sadie, Verna, Clara, Cecelia, Vicki and Margie.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial in Ernest's name will be established at a later date.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at St. Ladislaus Catholic Church in Bevent. The Rev. Augustine Bentil will officiate.
