Jacqueline L. Hoppen
Jacqueline L. Hoppen, age 85, of Stevens Point, WI, currently residing in Lakewood, CO, passed away Friday, September 13, 2013 at Emeritus at Green Mountain Assisted Living Facility where she has been a resident since June 2012.
A memorial service was held on Thursday, September 19, at the Lutheran Church of the Master in Lakewood, CO. Jacqueline's remains will be returned to Stevens Point and laid to rest next to William at a future date. Friends and family will be informed of the arrangements as soon as they are confirmed.
Jacqueline was born on July 3, 1928 to John & Marguerite (Thrune) Groenert in Lacrosse, WI. She moved to Stevens Point at a young age, graduating from P.J. Jacobs High School. Following high school, she attended UWSP for a short time and then joined Sentry Insurance. Jackie married William Hoppen in 1951. William preceded her in death in 2008 after 57 years of marriage. Jackie and Bill had 7 children. One child, Karl, died in infancy.
Jackie and Bill loved to travel, taking the family on camping trips and extended road trips to the western states. After the children were grown they expanded their travels to all parts of the United States, including Alaska.
After working as a teacher's aid for several years Jackie returned to work at Sentry Insurance in her late 40's where she worked as a manager in the Records Department until retirement. She was involved in city and county government for many years where she served on the planning commission for Stevens Point, on the board for Portage County Health and Human Services and as a Portage County Commissioner. Jackie also managed to find the time to be an active member of Operation Bootstrap, Aids Ministry, Sweet Adeline's Singing Group, Progress Club, Art League, and St. Joseph's Circle, where she was also a member of the congregation.
Survivors include two daughters: Peg (Bill) McCombie of Lakewood, CO; Jane Hoppen of Brooklyn, NY and four sons: Kurt Hoppen of Kirkland, WA; Pete (Susie) Hoppen of Buena Vista, CO; George (Beth) Hoppen of Green Bay, WI; & Erich (Samantha) Decker-Hoppen of Islamorada, FL.; and two sisters, Jane Washatka, and Mary (Cliff) Falkavage. She is further survived by eight grandchildren: Jon, Sam, Kurina, Will, Alicia, Jacob, Nick and Adam; and 2 great-grandchildren, Grayson and Coulter; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, William, and infant son, Karl.
