Leonard G. Hernecheck
Leonard G. Hernecheck, age 95, of Stevens Point, died July 6, 2013 at Portage County Health Care Center with his family by his side.
Leonard was born December 17, 1917 to the late Joseph & Jenny (Schwartz) Hernecheck in Cleveland, OH. He grew up there and attended the local schools. Following graduation from West Technical High School, Leonard studied at Case Western Reserve University and graduated in 1942 with a bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering.
Leonard joined the Navy on May 18, 1942. He served in the South Pacific and was in charge of the Navy Diesel School at the University of Illinois
Urbana-Champaign. He was honorably discharged December 2, 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant.
Leonard married Mary Elizabeth Trezise March 18, 1950 at the First Methodist Church in Evanston, IL. They were happily married for 53 years. She preceded him in death on September 2, 2003.
He began his career with the University of Illinois in 1946 at the Galesburg campus Physical Plant. He then transferred to the Urbana-Champaign campus where he retired in 1980 as Director of Operations and Maintenance with 34 years of service.
Leonard will be remembered for being a loyal University of Illinois sports fan being a season ticket holder for the football and basketball games. In his free time, he was an avid bridge player, was in an University bowling league, as well as playing handball and swimming at the University Recreation Centers. He also enjoyed time at his cottage in Door County and being a Cleveland Indians baseball fan. He was known in the Champaign area for his prize winning roses and his garden of over 200 rose bushes. Leonard was an emeritus member of American Association of Physical Plant Administrators and was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Champaign, IL.
He is survived by his daughters, Marilyn Sue (Jim) Buck of Stevens Point, WI, and Patricia (Dan) Luessenhop of Wheaton, IL. He is also survived by a brother-in-law and his wife, Frederick W. and Priscilla Trezise of North Andover, MA, as well as six nieces and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph & Jenny; wife, Mary Elizabeth; and sister, Hilda Bigalow.
Private services are being held in Champaign, IL with Rev. Susan Zencka of Frame Memorial Presbyterian Church of Stevens Point, WI officiating.

The family would like to thank the staff at Oakridge Assisted Living, Portage County Health Care Center and Recover Health for the care of their father after he moved to Stevens Point in 2009.
