Leonard Winkel, 95, died Sunday, January 20, 2013, at the Leesburg Regional Medical Center in Leesburg, Florida.
He joins, his wife, Nettie, who died in 2010 in heaven. He is survived by his son, Joe Winkel Sr. of San Leandro, CA; grandson, Joe Winkel Jr. of Chicago, IL; granddaughter, Angela de la O and great-grandsons Victor, Matthew, and Nathaniel all of Ripon, CA.
He was born and raised in Colby, WI after which he moved to Stevens Point, WI to attend college. While attending college he changed direction and joined the US Army
. After being discharged from the Army in 1945, he returned to Stevens Point where he worked for Bake-Rite Bakery and then for Sentry Insurance. He met and married Nettie in 1950. They retired to Leesburg, FL in 1981.
While serving in the US Army during WWII
as a medic, Leonard saw action in the Battle of the Bulge where he was awarded the Bronze Star
A memorial service was held Mon., January 28, 2013 at Grace Bible Baptist Church, Leesburg, FL. Pastor George Mulford officiated.
Leonard's cremains will be joined with Nettie's cremains and they will be scattered by family under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco Bay, CA.
