Lucia Fern Pope Nicewander, 90, of Waupaca, died Thursday, November 8, 2012, at Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca. She was born on July 7, 1922, daughter of Charles Arthur and Jennie (Davidson) Pope.
Lucia grew up as a Lind Center farm girl. For her entire life, she had a deep love for dogs and flowers, reading and collecting books, playing cards, and enjoying baseball (especially the New York Yankees). Beginning in 1960 and into 2010 when she retired, she became close friends with many of her co-workers at all the businesses where she enjoyed cooking and baking. Over the years, those included the Weyauwega A & W, Waupaca's Tastee-Freeze, Three Squares Restaurant, Jansen's Restaurant, The Library Restaurant, and the Piggly Wiggly.
Lucia is survived by sons Jim (Sue) Nicewander of Plover, and Dan (Lynn) Nicewander of Shakopee, Minnesota; daughters-in-law Sharon, Susan, and Nan; grandchildren Jeff, Joe, Jason, Jarrod, and Jonathan Nicewander; Jenni Yang and Jodi Jewell; Tracy, Travis, Tom, Ted, and Terri Nicewander; and Amy Nicewander and Holly Brunson. In addition, she is survived by many nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren. And as she was so often fond of saying with a wink, she had many grand-puppies, too. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, four brothers and one sister; her husband, Melvin; and two sons, Bill Nicewander and Dave Nicewander.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, November 11, at MAPLE CREST FUNERAL HOME in Waupaca, with Rich Engle officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1:00 PM until the time of the service.
