Mary L. Nass, 73, of Raleigh, N.C., passed away on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at the Duke University Hospital located in Durham, N.C., where she lost her hard fought battle with cancer. She was accompanied by her children at the time of her death. She was born in Stevens Point, WI on July 24, 1939, to the late Lillian and Byron Carpenter.

Mary was born in Stevens Point, WI, where she lived until 1986, when she moved to Carrboro, N.C., with her former husband, David Nass. She is survived by her brother, Nathaniel Carpenter, Amherst, WI; and her sister Eunice Klink, Green Bay, WI. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Wayne, Jim, and Pat; and by her sisters, Caroline and Violet and by her first husband, Ronald Goetz. She is also survived by her children, Michelle Kuplic (Neil) and her two children, Kyle and Lauren; Kevin Goetz; Gary Goetz; Linda Brown (Ken) and her two children, Mason and Parker; Sandy Hughes (John) and her two children, Ryan and Caitlyn; Brittany Bitto (Nick) and her daughter, Dylan; and her dog, Romeo.

Mary enjoyed bowling, family and social gatherings and was an avid North Carolina Tarheel and Green Bay Packer Fan. Her energy and wit combined with her incredible strength and perseverance lives on to inspire her beloved family. Mary will be fondly remembered as a wonderful mother and grandmother and was considered a friend by all that knew her. She lived her life to the fullest and we will honor her in her passing.

A private family memorial will be held at her daughter's (Michelle Kuplic) residence in Chapel Hill, N.C., on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Duke Cancer Institute ( in her honor.
