Orin Alvin Kleist, age 91, formerly of Almond, WI, died with cancer on Sunday, October 7, 2012 in his home at 824 Hazel Ridge Rd, Apt. #806 in Elkhorn, WI. He died peacefully with his family by his side. He was born on April 10, 1921, in the farm home of Gust and Lena (Bassler) Kleist, in the township of Oasis. Orin was a graduate of Almond High School and Oshkosh Business College. He married Melva (Zuege) Kleist at Peace Lutheran Church in Wautoma, Wisconsin, on June 10th, 1944. The couple recently observed their 68th wedding anniversary. They lived and farmed for 25 years on their farm, south of Almond. Orin then worked for the Detlor Tree Farm and later for James Burns and Sons for 30 years. He and Melva enjoyed traveling throughout the United States in their camper. He will be remembered for his love of cars, farming, his creative woodworking projects, and telling his many entertaining stories. However, his greatest joy was his family, especially playing with his four great grandchildren. Orin was a life long member of St John's Lutheran Church in Almond and served as their financial secretary for many years. He also was a member of the Almond Historical Society and an associate member of the Stevens Point Area Retired Teachers Association. Orin is survived by his wife Melva Kleist, his son Tom (Karen) Kleist; three grandchildren, Katie (Tom) Librizzi, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Kleist, and Christopher (fiancée Danielle) Kleist; four great grandchildren, Krystal and Brianna Librizzi and Madelyn and Jacob Kleist. Orin was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, Frank Schleicher. The funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 11 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Almond with Pastor Brian Roehrborn, officiating. Burial will follow in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday evening, October 12, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM, and also from 10:00 - 11:00 AM prior to the services on Saturday.
