Blankschein, Geraldine Louise

Geraldine Louise Blankschein, 74, Mt. Horeb/Stevens Point died Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at her home in Mount Horeb, WI, where she lived for the past seven years with her son and his family.

Gerry was born Aug. 29, 1937, in Aurora, IL, to Lloyd Wayne Smith and Alice Louise Kirchenbauer. She graduated from Naperville Community High School and in 1958 from the Chicago Wesley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.

As a registered nurse for more than 40 years, Gerry was committed to caring for others. She worked as a nurse at Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI for 13 years. She spent the remainder of her nursing career inspecting nursing homes for the State of Wisconsin, Department of Health and Family Services from which she retired after 29 years of dedicated service. Gerry was active in the nursing community, serving on the board of the WI Federation of Nurses and was appointed by Wisconsin Governor Tony Earl to the Nursing Home Administrators Examining Board, serving two terms. She received a Governor's Special Award in 1985 for her work on the Task Force of Comparable Worth which led to equal pay for nurses in WI.

Gerry loved to travel and took several trips to different countries and visited many parts of the United States. She was active in the United Methodist Church and many community activities. Gerry volunteered for many organizations in support of women and children, mission trips and those areas of service that were dedicated to help improve the lives of others.

Gerry's family and friends were important to her and she was always the first to reach out to help someone else. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and took every opportunity to visit with family and friends.

Gerry spent the last 10 years aware she had Alzheimer's, and volunteered to be part of a long-term Alzheimer's study to try and help those in the future. She was a brain donor to Wisconsin Alzheimer's Disease Research Center in Madison, WI.

Gerry is survived by her children, Jeffrey (Jeannine) Blankschein of Stevens Point; Douglas (Meg) Blankschein of Mt. Horeb; and Tedmund Blankschein of Milwaukee. She also is survived by her four grandchildren, Derek and Emma Blankschein, Elaina Barwick, Jasmine Blankschein; a sister, Betty Yohnka and two brothers, Roger (Dodie) and Harold (Ginny) Smith.

She also is survived by many loved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and wonderful friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at Doug and Meg's home: 3201 Bergum Road, Mt. Horeb. This will be a casual, comfortable gathering to remember Gerry.

A service of remembrance will be at 11 a.m. and visitation with family and friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church, 9542 Highway S, Mt. Horeb, WI with Rev. Cherie Forret officiating.

Memorial gifts will be given to those organizations which Gerry supported.
