Joseph R. Gruba

Joseph R. Gruba, age 90, of Stevens Point, died March 21, 2014, at home surrounded by his sons and daughter.

Joseph was born May 16, 1923 to the late Robert & Margaret (White) Gruba in Stevens Point. He grew up and attended local schools.

He joined the U.S. Army February 2, 1943. On June 6, 1944 Joseph participated in the invasion of Normandy. He also participated in the invasion of Germany and the liberation of several central European countries. During this time he was awarded numerous military medals; 4 Overseas Service Bars, American Defense Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 4 Bronze Battle Stars, & a WWII Victory Medal. Joseph served under General George S. Patton and the Third Army until the end of the war. He was honorably discharged December 14, 1945.

On November 22, 1947 Joseph married Theresa Trepkowski in Stevens Point. She preceded him in death on February 13, 1988. He married Bernice Raasch on June 3, 1990 in Stevens Point.

Before serving in WWII, Joseph was employed in Chicago, IL at Signode Steel Strapping Company. Following his discharge, he returned to Stevens Point and worked for various businesses including Jacobs Novelty Co., the City of Stevens Point, Soo Line Railroad, Eagle Plumbing & Heating and retired after 29+ years working at Consolidated Papers.

Joseph will be remembered as a skilled handyman. Having grown up in the depression, he learned to rely on what he had. There wasn't anything he could not fix. In his later years, he enjoyed tinkering with various projects from cars to clocks. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Moose Lodge, and St. Stephen Catholic Church. In his spare time, he also enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, traveling, playing cards (especially pinochle) and going to casinos.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Bernice; children, Thomas, Joye (James) Hamilton, & James (Joan Jinsky), all of Stevens Point; as well as 7 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Theresa; son, William; brothers, Greg, John & Jack; and sisters, Kathryn, Genevieve & Delores.

Funeral Service will be held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Boston Funeral Home with Dwaine Habrat officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 12 Noon until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Guardian Angel Cemetery with full military honors.
