Kenneth D. Pagel, age 84, a well known and respected businessman of Almond, WI passed away on Monday, December 30, 2013 at Stevens Point Care Center.
Kenneth was born in the Town of Almond on August 12, 1929, the son of the late Arthur J. and Alma (Bassler) Pagel. On December 1, 1951, Ken married Emily Hutkowski in Plover. After graduating from Almond High School, Ken worked on the family farm and later formed Pagel Brothers with his brother Merle. They purchased land and some machines to help in the construction business. In 1958, Pagel Brothers merged with Pagel Construction owned by their father to form Pagel Construction Company, Incorporated. Ken, along with his father and two brothers, Merle and Lyle, operated Pagel Construction Co., Inc. until 1988 when his brothers retired and he purchased the company from his brothers. He was an active member of the Almond Fire Department for 47 years, he was also a member of the Tri-County Thresherman's Association, Wisconsin Earth Movers Association, Wisconsin Road Builders Association, Almond Rod & Gun Club, Almond-Bancroft School Board, Historical Cat Collectors Association, Director of the Portage County Bank and a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church serving as President and other offices.
Ken loved traveling, going once to Japan for business and making seven trips to Alaska for vacation and hunting trips He passed on his love of the outdoors to his sons, daughters and grandchildren.
Ken is survived by his wife: Emily Pagel, Almond; his children: Dennis (Cindy) Pagel, Almond; Alan (Mickie) Pagel, Almond and Cathy Zanto, Wautoma; his ten grandchildren: Jennifer (Joe) Jakubek; Shelly (Nate) Somers; Jordan Pagel; Tyler Warner; Brian (Lisa) Warner & Brandon (Lynzi) Warner; Alan James Pagel II; Kevin (Hannah Case) Pagel; Jaclyn Zanto; Steven Zanto; and his three great grandchildren: Johnathan Jakubek, Ashton & Scarlett Warner: his son-in-law: Reed Warner, Almond; sister: Adeline Bork, Ashwaubenon; sister-in-law: Lorraine Pagel, Almond; brother-in-law: Ammery Hutkowski, Stevens Point. Ken was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Karen Warner, his brothers, Lyle & Merle and many other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A Christian Funeral Service will be on Saturday, January 4 at 11 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church, Almond with Reverend Brian Roehrborn, officiating. Burial will be in the spring at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday evening from 4 to 7 PM and one hour before the service Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church.
A memorial will be established in Kenneth D. Pagel's name for St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Almond Volunteer Fire Department.
All of Ken's busy life, he commented the most important part of his life was his faith and family, especially his wife. He loved sharing his many successful hunts and his antique tractor collection with everyone. Talking about his trips to Alaska and showing his pictures always brought a smile to his face.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Saint Michael's Hospital and the Stevens Point Care Center for guiding him through the last 3 weeks and Heartland Hospice staff for making him comfortable at the end of his life.
