Simkowski, Marie J.

Marie J. Simkowski, 92, of Fort Smith, Arkansas, formerly of Stevens Point, passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2012, in Fort Smith.

She was born on Dec. 18, 1919, in Stevens Point, to the late Paul J. and Johanna (Stefaniak) Pasternacki, and was a 1937 graduate of Emerson High School and attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Marie entered the U.S. Women's Army Corps (WAAC) on Dec. 18, 1942, in Milwaukee, serving as an Army Specialty Sales Clerk during World War II. Her honorable discharge, at the rank of corporal, took place on Jan. 15, 1945, in Miami Beach, Florida.

On Sep. 4, 1950, her marriage to Ambrose R. Simkowski took place at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Knowlton.

She had owned Pasternacki's Men's Wear and was later a homemaker. She was a lover of reading, travel, politics and Wisconsin news. Marie had been an evacuee of Hurricane Katrina.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan M. Simkowski of Fort Smith, and Sandra A. (Roger) Trzebiatowski of Stevens Point. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Paul Pasternacki, Jr.

Memorials may be made in Marie's name to the Salvation Army of Greater Milwaukee.

The memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2012, at Pisarski/Dzikoski Funeral Home, 703 2nd Street, Stevens Point, with the Rev. Dennis Stanchik officiating.
