Simons, Donald M.

Donald M. Simons, formerly of Wausau and most recently a resident of Oakridge Senior Living, passed away Saturday morning May 10, 2014. Don was born in Milwaukee on April 29, 1925. He was the son of Theodore and Lucille Simons. Don attended St. Roberts Grade School and The University School in Milwaukee. He then went on to graduate from Marquette University with a major in Business. Don was a proud Marine serving in both World War II and as an officer in Korea.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Jane (Heffernan) in 2010 and his sister, Patty Bach, of Milwaukee. Don is survived by his children, Mary (Terry) Hackett of Stevens Point and Ted (Pam) Simons of North Carolina. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Katie Simons of Seattle Washington, Michael (Tonya) Hackett of Marshfield and Meghan (Brian) Schleich of Chicago and his four great grandchildren Faith, Preston, Mia and Madeline.

Don worked as a shoe company executive for many years prior to going to work for Sentry Insurance from 1969 until his retirement in 1986. Don was an outdoor enthusiast. In his early years he was a polo player, mountain climber, jogger, and tennis player. He enjoyed spending weekends with his wife Jane on their boat at the Sturgeon Bay Yacht Club. Don was also a long time member of the YMCA in Wausau.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at 3:00 pm at St. Josephs Convent Chapel, Stevens Point. Rev. Thomas Lindner will officiate. Visitation will be from 2:30 to the time of services at the convent. Private burial with full military honors at Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters or The World Wildlife Foundation.

The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Oakridge Senior LIving for all the love and care they gave Don over the last five years. The family also thanks the staff at the Stevens Point Care Center and Heartland Hospice for treating Don and our family with such kindness and respect during his last days.
