Irvin L. Gartland

Irvin L. Gartland, age 81, of 5625 Sandpiper Drive, died January 16, 2013 at St. Michaels Hospital.

Irvin was born July 27, 1931 in Minneapolis, MN, to the late George and Minnie (Tennermann) Gartland. He grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from school there in 1950. He joined the U.S. Navy February 24, 1951 in Minneapolis, serving at Patuxent Navel Air Station, MD area and in North Africa, he received an Honorable Discharge in 1955.

Irvin married Esther M. Busch November 21, 1953. Following his service time, they settled in the Minneapolis area. In the 1950's he worked for the Star Tribune and in the 1960's was a blacksmith. In the 1970's he started his sales career, moving to Stevens Point in 1977. Among other businesses, he worked for 10 years for Farmers Insurance. He retired in 1996.

Irvin was a past president of the Stevens Point Morning Lions Club and life member of the VFW. Irv volunteered as a firefighter for over 10 years. He was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, being involved as Elder/Lay minister, helping with communion and on numerous church boards. When time permitted, he enjoyed walking, hunting and other outdoor activities.

Survivors include his wife, Esther; children, Wayne (Susan) of Chisago City, MN, Colleen (Barry) Frey of Eveleth, MN, Kurtis (Sue) of Morris, MN, Scott (Gracia) of Holly Springs, NC, and Keith (Kathey) of Richfield, MN. He is further survived by 3 grandsons, 5 granddaughters, a great granddaughter and nieces and nephews.

Irvin is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Gordon and a sister, Margaret.

A Celebration of his life will take place 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 21, 2013 at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Thomas Petersen officiating. A visitation will take place at Boston Funeral Home on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. A memorial is established in his name for St. Paul Lutheran Church and Brazil Missions.

A burial service will take place 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Arlington Township, near Arlington, MN, with visitation there beginning at 10:00 a.m.
