Eugene "Gene" J. Smrz

Eugene Joseph Smrz,

Age 80 of Plover passed away unexpectedly January 16th 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Gene was born March 20th 1933 in Junction City WI to the Late Ernest and Laura (Pendlewski) Smrz and was raised on the family farm. He graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1952.

He entered the United States Army on October 1, 1953 in Milwaukee, WI. He served with the 93rd Armed Infantry. Gene received the National Defense Service Medal, Army Occupation of Germany Medal, the Marksmanship Carbine Sharpshooters Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on September 17, 1955 at Fort Sheridan, IL.

Gene married Jeanette Shopinski on October 5th 1957 at St. Stephen's church in Stevens Point, eventually settling in Plover. His wife Jeanette survives.

Gene was employed by the Stevens Point School District and later Consolidated Papers in Stevens Point for 29 years retiring in 1994.

Gene enjoyed many hobbies such as Woodworking, Metal working and Gun Smithing. He loved Polka music and played the concertina. Gene enjoyed company and his Dachshund grand dogs named Cinder, Bentley and Jaci.

Survivors besides his wife Jeanette of Plover are his two sons; Tom Smrz and Scott (Lisa) Smrz both of Plover, his grandchildren Thomas (Ashley), Eric, Kyle, Josh and Taylor and two Great Grand Children Travis and Ryan.

He is further survived by two sisters Audrey (Wesley) Spreda of Stevens Point, Carol Swobe of Oshkosh, and one Brother Jim (Maryann) Smrz of Junction City, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters; Sally Berndt, Betty Bahr, Marjorie Singer and Alice Liebe.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 A.M. Monday January 20, 2014 at St. Bronislava Catholic Church. Monsignor Jeffrey Burrill officiating. Family and friends may call from 9:00 A.M Monday at the Church until the time for mass. The Pisarski Community Funeral Home of Plover is honored to be serving the family.
