Gertrude Zahner Obituary

Zahner, Gertrude Marguerite (nee Keating) Friday, February 8th in her 96th year. Born New York, New York, the eldest daughter of the late Warren F. Keating and Gertrude Tully Keating of New York, New York and Camden, Maine. Devoted wife of the late Russell M. Zahner of Richmond, Virginia; loving sister of the late Grace Keelty of Auburn, Maine; treasured mother of Judith E Rothman (The Hon. Kenneth J.) of St. Louis, Missouri and Crystal River, Florida; dear aunt, greataunt, great-great aunt, sister-inlaw, niece, cousin and compassionate friend to many. Gertrude was an accomplished ballroom dancer, classical pianist, competitive tennis partner and was terribly fond of her numerous English Cocker Spaniels and her rose gardens. She attended Marymount School of New York and was a graduate of Barnard College. Prior to moving to St. Louis in the mid-'50s, she was a graduate student at the University of Virginia. Throughout her life she spent her summers at the family compound in Maine- her favorite destination. Gertrude lived a life of dignity and reserve. She will be sadly missed, but lovingly remembered for her thoughtful nature, steadfast determination and strength. Services: Visitation Thursday, February 21, 9-10 AM at BOPP chapel, 10610 Manchester Rd., Kirkwood. Graveside service Thursday at 10:45 AM, Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. A memorial Mass will be held this Spring in Aiken, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Association of the Miraculous Medal, 1811 West St. Joseph St., Perryville, MO 63775 or the charity of your choice. www.boppchapel.com

Judy - So sorry to have missed seeing you at the visitation; I just ran across this today. We did not know your mother well, but I do remember her as a very gracious person. Your dedication to her care has been an example to all of us who walk (or have walked) a very difficult road.
