Mr. Catanzaro was born in St. Louis, Missouri on December 16, 1920 to Mary Grace Sansone and Marion Joseph Catanzaro. He was the middle son and brother to Cosimo Anthony Catanzaro and Marion Joseph Catanzaro, Jr. As a young man, the premature deaths of his father and two brothers gave Mike an appreciation for the preciousness of life and a desire to live his life to the fullest. Mike attended the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (MSM) in Rolla and graduated with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering. He enlisted in the US Navy and was commisioned as one of the 90-Day Wonders at Annapolis, MD. He served in the Pacific theatre and was assigned to Nagoya, Japan immmediately after VJ day. Anna and Mike raised their six children in Vandalia, Illinois where Mike owned and operated Vandalia Fruit and Produce Company. After retirement in 1985, he moved to the Champaign-Urbana community where he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, volunteering at the Saint Vincent de Paul food pantry at St. Patrick Church, euchre at the Stevick Senior Center, and attending classes at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and weekly Bible studies. Following the death of his beloved Anna in 2006, his last years were happily spent living with his grandaugher Elizabeth Jackson, her husband Matthew Beth and their children Holden, Jackson and Hadley. He also treasured time spent in his man cave with his only son, Michael, following the St. Louis Cardinals, UI sports, and playing cards. Of his six children, Mike was preceded in death by his daughters Mary Caroline (1997) and Maria Starr (1983) and survived by: Ann (Wayne) Garavaglia of St. Louis, MO, Christina (David) Whippo of Champaign, Elizabeth (Richard) Sutton of Robinson, Illinois and Michael (Mindy) of Arcola. Grandchildren are: Elizabeth Jackson (Matthew Beth) of Champaign; Alexandria (Jamie) Wilson, Anthony (Stephanie Hellmann) Garavaglia, and Cara Garavaglia, all of St. Louis, Mo; Liz (Matteo) Zapparoli of Milan, Italy, Mark (Ronda Niemerg) Whippo of Arlington Heights, and Paige Whippo of Breckenridge, Colorado; Aaron (Jenn Rybicki) Sutton of Champaign, and Susan (Ben) Sykes of New Albany, Ohio; Gianna Catanzaro of Carbondale and Arcola and Olivia Catanzaro of Nashville, Tennessee and Arcola. His 20 great-grandchildren are: Holden, Hadley & Jackson Beth; Nicholas, Marco, Adriana, Rocco and Vito Wilson; Brianna, Eligio and Emilia Garavaglia; Tommaso and Sienna Zapparoli; Isabella, Mia and Laila Whippo; Carolyn and Nathan Sutton; Sutton and Campbell Sykes. Special thanks go to Dr. Dang Ho, Presence Hospice, Synergy Homecare and Landell Nesbitt. Burial will be private in Vandalia. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be made to St. Vincent de Paul food pantry, Stevick Senior Center, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Presence Hospice or donor's choice. Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy is in charge of arrangements.
