Lt. Col. Bud Barbee U.S.A.F.

Barbee, Bud Lt. Col. U.S.A.F. (Ret) age 93, passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2011 in Rhode Island. He was the husband of the late Kathryn J. Kay Hampton Barbee, and brother-inlaw of the late Oscar P. Hampton, Jr. and the late Stanley F. Hampton, both of St. Louis. He grew up in St. Louis, son of the late Rose Overton Ammerman and the late Walter H. Ammerman. He was a graduate of McKinley High School, and stayed in touch with the McKinley Goldbugs. He was active in the Second Presbyterian Church youth group and later was a member of the Delmar Baptist Church. Bud met fellow student Kay at Washington University and they married in 1942. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in English 1940 and his Masters in 1949. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta. In his early career he taught at Maplewood and Ladue High Schools in St. Louis, and remained in contact with former students. He was Uncle Bud to Kay's nieces and nephews: the late Oscar P. Hampton III, (Suzanne), Harriet Hampton Edwards (Arnold), the late Elise Hampton Parsons (Robert), Beverlee Hampton Fraser, Margorie Hampton Phipps (Jay), Hila Hampton Green (Dan), and the late Forrest Hampton. He joined the United States Air Force in 1941, was a pilot serving in the U.S., Asia, Latin America and Southeast Asia, and retired as Lieutenant Colonel in 1972. His autobiography is entitled Three Wars - but Not a Hero. He led a full life, loved one woman, tried to be a good husband and father, and is survived by two daughters Barbara Lynne Barbee, Kathryn B. Kit Lawrence (E. Swift), three grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Services: Burial will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery at Bourne.
