Darlene Joan Schoon

Schoon, Darlene Joan Darlene Joan Schoon, (nee Maasdam), 74, of Chesterfield, MO, died Monday, September 23, 2013 at Brooking Park, following a courageous battle with brain cancer. She was born and raised on a farm in rural Jasper County, IA, on Nov. 21, 1938, to Leonard J. and Gertrude Susanna (Wielard) Maasdam. She attended a oneroom schoolhouse and then Sully (IA) High School. She graduated from Central College in Pella, IA, in 1960 with a bachelor's degree in Home Economics, and then married Paul Schoon at First Reformed Church in Pella. Through their 53 years of marriage, they lived in Pella, IA; West Branch, IA; Jamestown, ND; Ripon, WI; Peoria, IL; Carlinville, IL; and St. Louis, MO, and proudly raised two sons. Darlene's early career endeavors included teaching and serving as a Welcome Wagon hostess. She earned a second bachelor's degree in Accounting in 1983 from Bradley University in Peoria and served as an accountant for higher-education institutions until she retired from Washington University in St. Louis in 2004. Darlene loved traveling the world, quilting and other crafts, baking, reading, doting on her family, nurturing relationships, working and worshipping at her church, following the Cardinals, and celebrating her Dutch heritage. Darlene was the beloved wife of Paul; mother of Mark and Tim; mother-in-law of Amy; grandmother of Henry; sister of Lawrence (Melanie) Maasdam and Marge (Charles) Kramer; cousin, aunt, friend, and inspiration to many. Services: A Memorial Service will be conducted at Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church, 9450 Clayton Rd., Ladue on Monday, September 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Private committal. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Darlene's name to Presbyterian Children's Homes and Services of Missouri, 1220 North Lindbergh Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63132.
