James Eugene Lewis Jr., M.D.

Lewis, James Eugene, Jr., M.D. at the age of 96, on Saturday, July 27, 2013. Son of the late James Eugene and Blanche Hayes Lewis; beloved husband of the late Elizabeth Betty Lewis; loving father of James E. Lewis, III (Kenna) of Kansas City, MO, Linda McCoy (Timothy), Elizabeth Panke (Robert) of St. Louis and the late Stephen McKee Lewis; dear grandfather of Rachel and Jamie Lewis, Whitney, Sean, Andrew and Lindsey McCoy, Samuel (Libby) and Beth Panke; loving brother of Mildred Settlage; brother-inlaw of Margaret Jean McKee; uncle, cousin and friend to many. Dr. Lewis was born in Mountain Grove, MO, February 22, 1917. He went to the University of Missouri (Phi Beta Kappa) and to Harvard Medical School (Alpha Omega Alpha). He served in a Mobile Evacuation Hospital in the ETO, including Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he was assigned to the White House as the Asst. Physician to President Truman. He returned to Boston to finish his training and met Betty Brooks McKee at the Harvard School of Design whom he married in 1950 at her ancestral home in Cheshire, CT. Unable to convince Yale to build a hospital dedicated to the care of infants and children only, Dr. Lewis answered the call to come to St. Louis for the opening of Cardinal Glennon Hospital. Dr. Lewis is considered a pioneer in the specialty of pediatric surgery, he was a Clinical Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at the St. Louis Medical School, and he served as Director of Surgery at Cardinal Glennon. Services: A Memorial Service will be held at the Church of St. Michael and St. George, 6345 Wydown Blvd., Clayton, MO on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Private burial in Cheshire, CT. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center, 1465 South Grand Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63104-1095, (www.glennon.org) or the Church of St. Michael and St. George (63105).
