Robert Powers Obituary

Powers, Robert W. age 92, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Friday afternoon, July 25, 2014. Radiating the care and good humor that he was known for throughout his life, he prepared these words to serve as his obituary: Bob was born on September 13, 1921 on his mother's family farm one mile from Willard, Georgia which is an insignificant little place now dried up and blown away. He spent his early years in Atlanta; he graduated from North Fulton High and the University of North Carolina. He served, without distinction, in the US Marine Corps from May 1941 to February 1946, was honorably discharged as captain, and entered the life insurance business in Lancaster, PA. He moved from Hartford, Connecticut to St. Louis in 1949 as a pilgrim for a large eastern insurance company (CIGNA). In 1960 he founded the consulting firm of Powers Carpenter & Hall: now the St. Louis office of Buck Consultants, a Xerox Company. He was happily married four times and has fairly well balanced and productive children. Michael R. Powers of Monaco; Kate Powers of Monaco; Rainey Fogiel of Dallas and Drake Powers of St. Louis. He is survived by his longtime friend, Suzy Seldin; five grandchildren: Shane, Natasha, Patrick, Natalie, and Casey; and two greatgrandchildren. He lived a uniquely happy and satisfying life but never learned to putt very well. Services: A memorial service, planned by Bob, will be at 3 p.m., Friday, August 1, at the Ethical Society, 9001 Clayton Rd, St Louis, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be made to Mentor St. Louis (online at http://www.bgcstl.org) or mailed to: Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis, 2901 North Grand Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63107. Bob was such a unique and special person and I'm fairly certain there will not be another like him. He brought a smile to people's faces and really brought something special to all who had the privilege of knowing him. Bob's final tribute could not have been more heartwarming. My sympathy goes out to family and friends. Bob, you were a one of a kind and will be greatly missed.

I only met Mr. Powers a few times, but his pull on my life has been significant. He was my parents' employer and mentor at Powers, Carpenter & Hall. I grew up hearing stories of his professional, sartorial & raconteurial prowess. When I was 12, he loaned me an antique printing of Plutarch's "Lives," which I somehow lost. I watched him, then in his 80s, dance at my brother's wedding and thought: "There's a man worth emulating." My father thought the same thing. And so, in ways direct and indirect, Mr. Powers has improved my life. I feel his loss, and I sense how tremendous his loss must be for those who knew him so much better, and so much longer.

Bob clearly never lost his sense of humor, or his good looks. I was fortunate enough to accompany Bob and Drake on many an escapade back in the day. The laughs never stopped. Bob had a unique sense of hysterically funny, self-deprecating humor. We always had a good belly laugh at Bob's expense, and he loved every minute of it. I am so sorry for the loss of this great man. I will never forget him. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends.

Bob was always full of life and an infectious humor. He took time to recognize and appreciate people and I'll always treasure the times he did that for me. When I thought I was insignificant Bob made me feel special - the mark of a great man.
