Verlene and Family,

My grandmother died this week. From my perspective, as the second child of her eldest child, she was a perfect grandmother. She was kind, strict, patient, helpful, demanding, rewarding and a bit quirky. She was just how grandmothers are suppose to be. As my grandparents lived just over a hill from my parents I spent a lot of time at their place during summers. Although my childhood memories are fading fast there are certain memories I am sure will last.
- listening/playing player piano music at Christmas
- playing pinnacle at family get-togethers
- picking strawberries in the Missouri summer heat
- seeing grandma's teeth in a glass during a late night bathroom visit while spending the night and then running into her, toothless, as I left
- plastic covering her living room sofa and not allowing us in the living room except for special occasions
- horrible coffee "candies" in her purse and a bowl of mints in the living room
- great cook with our hunting and fishing spoils but I don't know what to say about brains and tongue
- Her green Volvo
More importantly I remember the sense or feeling being around her. I don't have a single bad memory. I felt her love and she deserve my love and respect. She had a great attitude and strong personality.
She faded during her final year and though I regret not being able to help and comfort her and my family due to living abroad I am fortunate that my lasting memories of her sharp wit and endless stories have not been dampened. It was her time and I am proud being her grandson.
