Doctor and Mrs. Moorkamp: My mom Helen told me of the sad news of your son's living this place called Earth...we can only hope there is a better place for him, to which we may one day also find. I was interested to hear about the thyroid cancer gene. I regrettably could not make the wake but am thinking about your family in my prayers, as I was moved by your attendance at my dad's wake. Sincerely, Tom Whalen

In my early memories, Jim was just one of the many boys at Cove Lodge. Between his brothers, my brothers and their friends, there were boys everywhere enjoying boy chaos. I didn't become aware of Jim's unique creativity until he was in college and he told us about driving to California for a competition with a structure he'd built, with about 100 boxes of toothpicks, in the back of his Ford Escort. My next memory was of Jim's amazement that he was getting paid to float on a raft - it was his first paid holiday ever! In later years, when Jim had a rare weekend to spend at the cove, it was always a highlight to ask him about his latest work projects. My most consistent memory of Jim is his easy grin and ability to put a positive and humorous spin on life's many obstacles. The world is a better place having known Jim, I'm very happy to have called him my friend.

Nancy, I am so sorry to hear about Too Tall. There are no words of comfort that I or anyone can share with you at a time like this. Just take comfort in your memories of all the wonderful times you had together. And have faith that you will see him again. We were all better off for having known him.
Much love,

Jim was a great friend and I am a better person, both personally and professionally, for knowing him. The world has lost someone very special. Nancy, Molly and Sam take what solace you can in knowing that Jim had a positive impact on every thing he touched. Sometimes small, but most often significant. He will be greatly missed by all and not forgotten.

My family has been honored to know the Moorkamps for over 50 years at this point. I remember Jim running around in the creek behind the house or building forts with Bill and Tom. I was treated to any number of brother inspired pranks and ribbing over the years as they grew up-mostly sparing Laura-unless it was a potential boyfriend!. I definitely remember staying up late at night for our collective parents bridge parties at Dr. Bill's house, gamely trying to stay awake and goof off despite our parent's protestations. I always found it amazing Jim could fold himself into the backseat of that Mustang. I really enjoyed the carpooling gymnastics as we jumped over seats and screwed around on the way to and from school in a bunch of different cars. Jim was always a gracious and warm hearted soul. He never picked fights and avoided confrontation, but he was always there if you asked. He was a quiet leader and a man of moral character. He always inquired how others felt and never dwelt on himself. I know he was very proud of his children and you could see it in his eyes as he watched his son Sam swim for Chaminade. Words never bring much comfort at these times, but if they help anyone it is worth the effort. I know this for sure: Anyone who knew Jim was better off for it and the world is a lesser place without him. Our thoughts, love and prayers go out to the Moorkamps.
