William Santen Obituary

Santen, William C. Returned to Jesus, Sat. Sept 22, at the age of 82. He was preceded in death by all his siblings, Lawrence Santen, Raymond Santen, and Mildred Carpenter. He was married to his Cutie Rita (How) Santen for 57 years. He was always very proud of his four daughters Kathy Santen (Sean Grennan), Karen Santen, Karol Goad (Gary), and Kim Blackford (Richard). The only thing he loved to do more than watch the Cardinals was to watch his grandsons, Tony, Jonathan, and Adam Goad, Isaiah and Jacob Blackford, and Alex Morton play whichever sport was in season. Many others will remember his sweet spirit as a cherished brother-in-law, uncle, great uncle, cousin, and friend. Bill was an Army veteran of the Korean War. After the war, he began work for the GM&O railroad, which led to his love of model trains and volunteer work at the Museum of Transportation. Bill retired after 30 years as clerk at the Kirkwood and Sappington branches of the US Post Office. He also ran his own printing business, Bill's Press, out of his home. He was a member of St. Peter Parish where he was an usher for the past 25 years and a Fourth Degree member of the Kirkwood Knights of Columbus. Services: Visitation Wed. from 4:00 - 8:00, Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Rd. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thurs. at 10:30 at St. Peter Church, 243 W. Argonne. In lieu of flowers, contribution can be made to the Knights of Columbus Developmental Center at Cardinal Glennon or the Museum of Transportation. Masses for William are also appreciated.

To all the family of Bill. We were blessed to have known you and your gentle ways and great smile through out the years. You have a great wife and daughters that love you. Those grandsons are the the greatest and will carry on what you have taught them. The son in laws did such a good tribute to you and will take care of your daughters. So glad you were in our lives. The Christian's and their families.

One of the disadvantages of coaching is that you don't get the opportunity to sit a talk to the other parents and grandparents. So I didn't get to know Bill as well as I would have liked. But I admired him greatly for his support of grandchildren. He seemed to be at all the games cheering on the boys. We're so sorry for your loss and we're praying for your family. He will be missed.

Hi, Kathy. Please accept my sympathies.

When I first came to work at the Post-Dispatch a little over 10 years ago, one of the first people to call and wish me well was your mom, who remembered me from all those years ago and subsequently called me again with very kind compliments about my writing. Joe Schulte had told me previously about your success in Chicago, and I was so pleased to find out that you made it all the way to Broadway, and stayed. It's amazing how many talented people I was lucky enough to interact with way back when.

I hope you're comforted during the next few days by many happy memories of your family and of growing up.

Dear Kathy & Sean,

I'm so very sorry for your loss. I feel lucky that I got a chance to meet Mr. Santen many years ago at Sean and Kathy's wedding. He was clearly a lovely and well-loved man. I hope you all find comfort in what I'm sure are copious happy memories with him. Love and light to all.

I never met this beloved man, but knowing his daughter Kathy gives me some sense of what a good man he must have been. Love remains when all else fades and that love sustains us. There must be a great deal of love in this family.
