Ann Metcalfe Obituary

Metcalfe, Ann T. Nancy (nee Thornley) age 92, died peacefully at her residence at #1 McKnight Place in St. Louis, Missouri, on December 4, 2013. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 1, 1921, the daughter of George Hetzel Thornley and Rebecca White Thornley. She grew up in Philadelphia with her parents and older sister Elizabeth (Betty), graduated in 1939 from the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and then attended the Katherine Gibbs School in New York while living with her father and stepmother in Greenwich, Connecticut. She was married to Adolphus Busch Orthwein of St. Louis, Missouri, on May 3, 1941, at St. Bartholomew's Church in New York City. As the wife of an officer in the United States Navy during World War II, she traveled and lived in many parts of the country until 1944, when she settled with her husband and the first of their four children in St. Louis County, where she lived for the remainder of her life. On May 11, 1963 she married David D. Metcalfe, Jr. of St Louis. Their wedding was the first ever celebrated at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church. They shared a loving marriage for 36 years until he passed away on September 24, 1999. She and her husband traveled playing golf in many countries as a part of the United States Senior Golf Association creating friendships and goodwill throughout the world. After Mr. Metcalfe's death she moved to the Whitehall Apartments, The Gatesworth, and for the past 22 months she was well cared for in its Extended Care facility. In St. Louis, Nancy was active in many organizations including St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, the Junior League and The Home of the Friendless (the Charless Home), of which she served as president. She also was a member of the St. Louis Country Club, Bon Marche Investment Club and the Riomar Country Club in Vero Beach, Florida, where she enjoyed spending many winters. Her hobbies included golf, tennis, bridge and backgammon. She is survived by four sons and three daughter-in-laws, Adolphus Busch Orthwein, Jr.(Judy) of Atlanta, Georgia, Stephen August Orthwein (Ginny) of Wellington, Florida, Peter Busch Orthwein (Beverly) of Greenwich, Connecticut and David Thornley Orthwein of Eolia, Missouri, eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by one nephew, Ben Whitman of Maryland, and loved ones from Mr. Metcalfe's family, Carol Bitting, Terry Culver, David Culver (Joan), Janey Rouse (Ernest), Douglass Rexford, Peter (Ann)Rexford and fifteen young ones of their respective families. Services: A memorial service will be held at the St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 808 North Mason Road, on Saturday, December 7th at 12:00 Noon followed by a reception for family and friends at a nearby location. In lieu of flowers please send contributions to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church (808 N Mason Rd, Creve Coeur, MO 63141), Mercy Hospice (1000 Des Peres Rd. 63131) or the charity of your choice.
