He helped me learn a lot about myself. Things I'd been struggling with for years. The last eight years of my life have been turbulent, but Alan Shiller helped me through one of the hardest times without ever knowing it. I'm not sure what I'll do now. So it goes.

Dr. Shiller was my oral argumentation teacher in Fall of 2012. He became one of my favorite teachers throughout my college career, and I will miss the opportunity to learn more from him.

I also taught at Meramec and Alan was very resourceful and was willing to help whenever he could. I appreciate all the advice and suggestions he gave. I'm sorry for his lost- he will be truly missed.

Dear Family of Mr. Shiller,

Mr. Shiller was one of my favorite instructors at SIUE. I only took one class with him, however, it was one of the best I have taken. Mr. Shiller truly cares about student success and helped out greatly. Mr. Shiller is a great man and my prayers go out to his family members.

2004 Winning Tally

From this union organizer's perspective, it was pure pleasure to work with someone as determined as Alan in empowering and advocating for his non-tenure track faculty colleagues at SIUE. His positive energy and commitment was infectious and inspiring. He was the first to respond to the call and did not stop until the 'herd of cats' of far flung and isolated NTT faculty was organized. Then he served as the new union's president and most effective negotiator. I learn now that this was his approach to everything about which he cared - and that's a lot of things, and so quite a legacy. This photo of Alan was taken as the winning tally is announced at the 2004 vote creating his SIUE NTT Faculty Association-IEA.

Alan was one of the first faculty members that I met when I started teaching in the Communications Department at StLCC at Meramec years ago. His friendliness, helpfulness and upbeat personality made me feel right at home. I am so glad to have met and worked with Alan. He was truly a gift to his many students and to all with whom he so generously shared his talents.

I took Human Communications Oct-Dec 2013 at Webster's downtown campus because my other class was cancelled, and now am so glad I had the opportunity to meet and learn from Mr. Shiller. I'll probably never have another textbook-less class! In the short time I knew him, it was clear he truly enjoyed life. My prayers go out to all of his family.

My sincere sympathy to Alan's family. I first heard Alan's name while attending graduate school at the University of Georgia. He had recently left the University to begin teaching in Missouri and the folks in Georgia were very complimentary. Several years later I began teaching at STLCC-Meramec and got to meet Alan. He always had a positive outlook and earned the respect of his students and colleagues. We will miss you.

Alan was such a great guy, and while I never had the pleasure of being taught by him, I truly enjoyed how he would invite me to his classes to help provide insight and get to see the many great students he impacted over the years.

I will miss seeing him on the SIUE campus, and my thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family and friends.

Alan was a great public speaking instructor and mentor to his students. I have had the pleasure for about the last 15 years working with him and his students at STLCC and the CNTV LAB. My wife and I enjoyed having dinner with him, his wife, and his students on finals night. It was a wonderful experance to see his students master what they learned. He will be remembered as a man who enjoyed life, his family and his wife. He will greatly be missed. My prayers go out to his family for their loss. May God be with them till we all meet again. Rest in peace Alan.
