Oakes Ortyl Obituary

Ortyl, Oakes Lee 15 months old, passed peacefully into heaven while in the loving arms of his parents on June 6, 2012 at St. Louis Children's Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Oakes was born on March 10, 2011 in St. Louis at Barnes-Jewish Hospital with truncus arteriosus, a congenital heart defect and spent just 18 days at home. Oakes endured many surgeries including two open-heart and a lung transplant. He earned the nickname Mighty Oakes early in life after miraculous recoveries from conditions he was not expected to survive. The story of his strength, his courage, his passionate willingness to live and his intense love for his family and friends inspired thousands of people across the globe and led to the founding of Mighty Oakes Heart Foundation whose objective is to provide financial support to families coping with the traumatic reality of CHDs. Oakes is survived by his mama, Rebecca Ortyl, his papa, Greg Ortyl and his beloved big sister, Isla Patrina Ortyl; great-grandmother Patrina Ortyl of O'Fallon, MO; grandparents: Bill Fox and Jan Christine of Wilmington, NC, Connie and Dale Moore of Guthrie, OK and Greg and Mary Jane Ortyl of St. Louis, MO; and the rest of his extensive, loving family. The family also wishes to recognize the tremendously talented, respected and deeply loved team of physicians, nurses and staff in the Cardiac ICU at SLCH. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family is humbly asking for donations to Mighty Oakes Heart Foundation at www.mightyoakes.org and for you to consider a donation of blood and/or registering for organ donation. Services: A memorial funeral service will be held this Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Webster Groves, Missouri at 10:00 AM.

Whether it´s 12 years or 32 years, what happened to our families will never be forgotten and is not fair Hang onto the memories and know that both our sons were loved and will be remembered everyday until we meet with them again.
We have been thinking about the Ortyls with a heavy heart but with comfort knowing Oakes spirit and love in all of you made 6/6/24 a little easier. As time goes on the pain subsided but the memories and love will bring a smile to your face between the tears.
Love,
The Buechels

My heart cries today as it has for the last 29 years for our son Chris and it especially hurts because you and your family have had the loss of your son 9 years ago. No one knows our sorrow, but they also do not know our strength from our sons to honor their memory with love !!!
You all are in my thoughts today

Greg,
Another year passes and the pain is still there for both of us I am sure.
Remember that the love and memories eventually outweigh the sorry and grief.
The years pass, yet the memories stay strong for the love we have for our children no longer with us.
I am sorry you are in this group ! You and your family nor Oakes deserved not being together.
But understand that your love will never leave his memory and the smiles will continue when his name is spoken and his picture is shared.
Thought about you and your family on Saturday with hugs !

Greg,
It is hard to believe your precious baby has been gone 7 years. I think of your family every year on this date, since Oakes passed on our Chris's 20th year he had been gone. I know it is hard every year, but what your family is doing in honoring Oakes is incredible. Keep up the great work and know that we are hear for you if you ever need us. Hope to see you soon at the restaurant to honor both of our children that left this world too soon.

Greg, Rebecca and Isla,
Words cannot express the sorrow Linda, Tony and I felt when we read about Mighty Oakes. Life throws some pretty awful curves at you and the loss of your son is the worst. You have been in our thoughts and prayers since we read about Mighty Oakes and today especially. Greg - Hug your wife and daughter and stay strong as we know you will. His memory will live with you every day for the rest of your lives and as time passes you will adjust to a new norm but you will never forget. His name will live on forever and always. We will remember him every year as we have remembered Chris for twenty years on June 6th.
If you ever need to reach out, do not hesitate to call us.

GJ, Becky & Isla, I remember what I felt when Danielle was taken from me at 11 months old. Janie and our family provided me with the strength and means to get her back, however, I can't imagine the magnitude of emotion in Oake's passing. I'm amazed at the strength that you all had during the last 15 months. So much so that I'm envious of you strength, hope & faith. You've done an imazing thing with the Foundation. This will keep Oakes in our thoughts & hearts the rest of our lives while graciously helping others in their time of need. I am honored to be able to participate in Saturday's Celebration and look forward to seeing everyone. You certainly will continue to be blessed for what you have done and, I suspect, will continue to accomplish. Much Love, Uncle Chip
