Patrick Kilcoyne Obituary

Kilcoyne, Patrick Gilmore Aug. 31, 1966-Nov. 20, 2017. Our beloved Patrick Gilmore Kilcoyne died peacefully on Nov. 20, 2017. He was surrounded by family. Pat was 51 and lived in Washington, D.C. Pat is remembered with love by his mother Kathleen (Gilmore) Kilcoyne, sister Paula (Nathan Ball) and brother Martin (Kimberly). He was an eternally proud uncle of Emma, AnnaClaire, Brendan, Timothy and Carson, stepson of Claire Kilcoyne and a close cousin, nephew and friend to many. His father, Dr. Ray Kilcoyne, passed away in 2006. Two days before he died in a comfortable hospice in Northwest Washington, D.C., Pat had the rare opportunity to hear his own eulogies at an impromptu celebration of his life. Family members gathered around him to proclaim their love, pray, talk and sing to Pat, who certainly would have dreaded the attention but was too tired to object. Born in Fort Lewis, Washington, and then raised in Milwaukee and Glendale, Missouri, Pat graduated from Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis is 1985. As a teenager, Pat wrote code to create his own computer games on the very first PCs, was virtually unconquerable in the board game Risk, argued politics with his Grandpa George and read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and master's degree in economics from American University in Washington, D.C. But the professors he befriended couldn't get rid of him. After receiving that master's, Pat audited courses at American for two more years-nearly enough for another degree. Pat loved his work as an economist for the federal government. Over his career he received several commendations for his exceptional performance with the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Department of Energy and, most recently, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. He worked and lived in Washington's vibrant Dupont Circle neighborhood, where he enjoyed gorgeous city views from his 10th-floor balcony. Pat led his own life and forged many unique experiences. In his lifetime he studied Chinese, slept in his car in Hawaii, made friends with residents at a L'Arche house in Ontario, had adventures with dear friends in Peru and gifted multiple family members with movie DVDs and Sierra Club calendars. His religious faith was important to him, and he had long conversations about Catholicism with people including his cousin, a Carmelite priest. He was an American and European history buff and a lover of music and film (from All the President's Men to Good Will Hunting). Pat was wicked smart and funny and, despite his gentle soul and infectious laugh, didn't suffer fools-as those who knew and loved him all experienced more than once. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 9, at 11 a.m. at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Webster Groves, Missouri. Visitation with his family will be between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to donate to L'Arche St. Louis (larchestlouis.org/donate).

I am very sorry to hear about Patrick. He and I knew each other from a volunteer organization on and off for a couple of decades, and used to share advice and laughs related to our both working in the federal government. I found Patrick a gentle giant with great humor and a sharp mind, and courageous about some challenges in life; this inspired me. I will miss him. My sympathy to you.

I met Patrick in high school, as I graduated with his cousin John from SLUH. I appreciated his unique nature and gentle soul throughout the years. I took him to a fraternity party in our college days, and I knew that wasn't his cup of tea. He had a sharp perspective on life, and smart sense of humor. He will be missed but never forgotten. I am thankful to have known him through his brother Martin. The Kilcoyne family is one of the best I've known, along with the Gilmores. God bless Patrick and his family.

My sympathies to all the family. Claire, his stepmother, and I have been friends since before Patrick came into her life. Through her I felt that I knew Patrick and I followed his life. A sad loss.

Patrick was a colleague of mine at CFTC in Washington, DC. He was, as all who knew him can attest, a gentleman--a truly nice fellow. Patrick had an easy laugh and a sparkle in his eye. I will remember him as a friend.

Our sympathies to Patrick's family and friends. He was a devout Recovery International participant and leader, and we will miss him in the Area Team #32 covering Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia. He was a great advocate and philosopher. Left us way too soon.
