Wetzel, Robert A. (Bob) 75, of Edwardsville, Illinois died at 6:30 p.m. Monday, January 21, 2013, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. Bob retired as President of the TheBANK of Edwardsville in 2004. He was born August 26, 1937, in Highland, Illinois the son of the late Arthur L. & Violet V. (Scheibe) Wetzel. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Ronald Wetzel. He married Carol Kemmerer on August 20, 1960, at Grace Methodist Church in Waterloo, Iowa. In addition to his wife, Carol, he is survived by a daughter, Andrea Wetzel-Darbon & husband Russell of Edwardsville; a son, Scott Wetzel & wife Kristi of Edwardsville; 4 grandchildren, Brawley (Lee) Darbon, Madison Olivia Darbon, Corbin Reid Wetzel, and Reagan Kate Wetzel; 3 brothers, Tom Wetzel & wife Alice of Wood River, Carl Wetzel & wife Donna of Hot Springs, Arkansas, and David Wetzel & wife Jessica of Alhambra. In addition he will be sadly missed by nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. Bob was a member of Eden United Church of Christ in Edwardsville. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the Illinois National Guard. Bob was a graduate of the Edwardsville High School 1955, Monmouth College with a degree in Business Administration in 1959, and a Graduate of the School of Banking, University of Wisconsin in 1972. He started his career in banking at TheBANK of Edwardsville in 1960 working as an Assistant Cashier, Vice President and Cashier 1973, Senior Vice President and Cashier 1976, and President in 1981. He served as President of TheBANK for 22 years, retiring August of 2004. Bob's past community involvements include: served on Board of Directors ABA Federal Bankpac, Backstoppers-The Policemen and Firemen Fund of St. Louis, Inc., Civic Entrepreneurs Organization, Deaconess Foundation Board of Directors, Edwardsville Central Business District Development and Improvement Committee, Edwardsville Community School District #7 Treasurer, Past President of Edwardsville Jaycees, Past President of Edwardsville/ Glen Carbon United Way, Director of Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Madison County Bankers Federation Executive Committee, St. Louis Sports Commission, State Treasurer's Banking Advisory Committee, and the Board of Trails West Council, Boy Scouts of America. Bob was currently serving on the Board of Directors Leadership Council of Southwestern Illinois where he was Past President, the Board of Directors Lewis & Clark Community College, Chairman of the Advisory Committee of Madison County Metrolink Feasibility Study, Board of Directors of Madison Mutual Insurance Company, Regional Commerce & Growth Association, The Edwardsville Rotary Club, SIU-E Foundation, SIU-E School of Business Advisory Board, The Alliance of Edwardsville & Glen Carbon Executive Council, TheBANK of Edwardsville Board of Directors and the University Park SIU-E Board of Directors. Bob has received numerous awards: 100 Black Men of Alton Award for Outstanding Contributions and Support of Education, the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce Albert D. Cassens Award for Outstanding Achievement, Anderson Hospital 7th Annual Founders Award, Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, Edwardsville Rotary's International Service Above Self Award, Leadership Council's 16th Annual Salute to Southwestern IL Award for Outstanding Leadership, Monmouth College Distinguished Alumnus Award, SIU-E Distinguished Service Award, the SIU-E Kimmel Award for Outstanding Community Service and, most recently, he received the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. Services: Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Eden United Church of Christ, 903 North Second, Edwardsville, Illinois. Visitation will continue from 11 am until service time at 1:00 pm Friday, January 25, 2013, at Eden Church with Rev. John Roberts officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. The family requests memorials to Eden United Church of Christ, Anderson Hospital, or SSM Hospice.
