Robert O'Connell Obituary

O'Connell, Robert F. (Capt. USNR, Retired) 89, Chesterfield, fortified with the sacraments of Holy Mother Church Dec. 26, 2010. Beloved husband of 63 years of Anne (nee Travis); adored father of Peggy (Bill) Luth, Anne (Doug) Albrecht, John (Anita) O'Connell and Sally (Jay) Nicholson; dearest grandfather of Libby, Matthew, Michael and Christopher Luth, Barry, Craig and Ted Albrecht, Robert, Henry and Martha O'Connell, Claire, Sarah Grace, Emily and Jill Nicholson; dear great-grandfather of nine, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. Bob graduated from Beaumont High School and in 1941 from Washington University in St. Louis where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He was a U.S. Navy submarine officer in the Pacific during World War II, earning a Bronze Star. Although a chemical engineer, Bob spent nearly his entire career in sales. A native of St. Louis, he lived more than 40 years in Kirkwood where he was a member of St. Peter's Church. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed fishing, travel, reading, cooking and, most of all, tinkering in his basement workshop. Bob was honest, kind, brilliant and funny and will be deeply missed. Services: Funeral Mass Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at 10 a.m. at St. Anselm Catholic Church, 530 S. Mason Rd., Creve Coeur, MO. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Alzheimer's Association St. Louis Chapter or Washington University (St. Louis) School of Engineering.
