Abcouwer, Simon Jr. died peacefully on August 5 of heart failure in the care of his son, Steve and daughter-in-law, Leslie in their home in Chelsea, Michigan. Born March 10, 1919 in Amsterdam, Holland, Simon was raised in Chicago, IL from the age of 7. He served as a B-17 bomber tail gunner over Europe during WWII and then attended Augustana College in Rock Island, IL on the GI Bill. He married Marianne Wright and lived in Kirkwood, MO for over 30 years, where he served as a deacon of the First Presbyterian Church. He retired in 1985 as owner of Foot-So-Port Shoes store on Olive Ave in St. Louis. Simon was preceded in death by his second wife and soul mate, Adele Farrell. Simon was the beloved father of Joanne Marino (deceased), James K. Abcouwer and Steven F. Abcouwer, grandfather of 8, great-grandfather of 7 and great-great-grandfather of 7. He had many dear friends including West Park Ave neighbors, players at the Duplicate Bridge Program at Webster Groves Community Center and singers at the Hide Away Piano Bar. With Adele, Simon entertained many by singing and playing harmonica in over 400 musical gigs performed at area retirement and nursing homes. Services: The family will receive friends Thursday, Aug. 8 in the GREAT HALL OF AMBRUSTER CHAPEL from 5 - 7pm. Interment 1pm Friday, Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery with full military honors.
