Born in Alton, Illinois, beloved son of the late Henry and Nettie (nee Rumple), married for 62 years to Isabelle Lenhardt (nee Fracchia); father of Patricia (Tom) Walther; devoted grandfather of David (Lindsey) Walther, Aimee-Marie Lenhardt (Facundo) Oyenard and Sarah Marie (Joe) Bauer; loving great-grandfather of Ryan, James Donald and Madelyn Walther, Soledad and Amalia Oyenard, Jackson and Leo Bauer. The original good guy, a great man loved by all who knew him. Scouted by the St. Louis Browns when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, he left college and joined the Navy, thus missing five Baseball seasons. A member of the Greatest Generation and a player during the Golden Years of Baseball. The Browns remembered him after the war, so they signed him and sent him down to the bushes where he clouted many prodigious long balls from 1946 through 1949. It was the excellent 1949-1950 winter ball season Don had in Havana, Cuba that set the stage to make it to the Big Leagues with the Brownies in 1950, a rookie at the age of 27. Playing for Havana, Don led the Cuban League in homers while batting .314. Upon the completion of his playing years, he worked for the Boston Red Sox as Scout; First Base Coach; Hitting instructor; Consultant. He retired from the Red Sox in 2002. Services: Funeral Mass at Incarnate Word Catholic Church, 13416 Olive Blvd., Chesterfield, Monday, 9:00 a.m. Interment Resurrection Cemetery.
