Graduating from high school at an early age, Phyllis was teaching in a one room school house in rural Missouri when she was just fourteen years old. She would later earn both her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Education with honors from Washington University. Applying for a federal grant, Phyllis served as the founding Director of the Let's Get Ready For Kindergarten preschool program - a forerunner of what is now known as the Parents as Teachers program. Phyllis also helped develop a cross-age teaching program (Big Brothers and Sisters Assist Readers) involving fifth grade students tutoring first grade students, which was found to be beneficial to both tutors and tutees. Phyllis participated in various professional educational organizations as both member and officer, including Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary organization for women educators, St. Louis Suburban Elementary Principals Association, Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals, and the National Association of Elementary School Principals. During a career that spanned four decades, Phyllis was recognized many times for her service and dedicated leadership to elementary education including Outstanding Administrator, Missouri National Distinguished Principal, and National Distinguished Principal awarded by President Reagan. Working tirelessly in support of children's education, Phyllis was loved and respected by all who knew her.
