Doxsee, Joan Tucker Born Sept. 21, 1929 and Fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church on Wednesday, February 20, 2013. Joan, loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother, lost her brave yearlong fight with cancer. Though a non-smoker, Joan was diagnosed last year with lung cancer after having previously beaten pancreatic cancer five years earlier. She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Leigh A. Doxsee Jr, her father former Mayor Raymond R. Tucker, and her mother Mrs. Edythe L. Tucker. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law John T. and Lucy C. Tucker, her three children Leigh Tucker Doxsee, Judy Doxsee York (Ronald K.), and Dr. Deborah J. Doxsee (Jan Heumann), six grandchildren (Jeff York, Chris York, Clayton Doxsee, Shannon Doxsee, Abby Dunne and Corey Dunne) and one great grandchild (Biz York). Having earned the name GGMa (great grand ma) just a year and a half ago, Joan was happiest when playing and visiting with her family including her five very special nieces and nephews. Joan met her husband in the quadrangle at Washington University in 1946 and they married on New Year's Day 1947. She continued to be an active supporter of the University throughout her life and due to her intellectual curiosity regularly attended classes at the Life Long Learning Institute as recently as last semester. She was an avid movie goer and music lover listening to jazz, classical, big band and musicals. She also loved travel, St. Louis and following and talking politics. Joan's life was a model of the loving yet strong, tenacious and independent individual she encouraged her children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren to become. She will be missed and will live on in our hearts. Unending appreciation to BJC Hospice and the women of Accucare.
