Arthur Eugene Stevens Schmid

Schmid, Arthur Eugene Stevens (Steve) Arthur Eugene Stevens (Steve) Schmid passed away on Thursday, June 20th, 2013, at the age of 84. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Betty Bachle Schmid, their four sons, Leo Bachle (Randy), Edwin Alexander II (Katie), William Stevens (Grace) and David Firman Schmid (Mimi) and nine grandchildren: Andrew, Carter, Megan, Brendan, Teddy, Mollie, Eddie, Pate and Nina (Alex) Engelsmann. Steve was born in Webster Groves, Missouri, in 1928 to Edwin Alexander Schmid and Sylvia Stevens Schmid. He is preceded in death by his sisters Marian Schmid Logan, Edwine Schmid Mill, Helen Schmid Hardy, and a brother, Alexander Lewis Schmid. Another brother, Clifford Allen Schmid, resides in Florida. Being an honor student in high school allowed Steve to attend Yale University, where he graduated with a degree in political science in 1950. He later graduated with honors from Washington University Law School in 1953, placing second in his class and was awarded the Order of the Coif. In 1952, he enlisted in the Army for two years and lived in El Paso, TX, with Betty. His professional life started at the law firm of Peper Martin. Soon thereafter, he became general counsel for the American Zinc Company (AZCON) where he rose to the rank of president. After AZCON was sold, he then moved to First National Bank of St. Louis (later Centerre) as general counsel. In 1980, he formed a bank holding company, Financial Bancshares, with his brother, Cliff. Together, they expanded the company into metropolitan St. Louis and southeast Missouri before selling it in 1996. In his spare time, he served on the board of St. Luke's Hospital and was a trustee for the First Congregational Church of Webster Groves. He loved spending time with his family, vacationing in Macatawa, Michigan, reading, swimming, watching football and baseball with his sons, playing with his grandchildren and spoiling his numerous dogs. He will be fondly remembered for his kindness and humility, and he will be greatly missed by his wife, children, grandchildren and many friends. Services: A Memorial Service will be conducted at First Congregational Church of Webster Groves, 10 West Lockwood Ave., at Elm Ave., Webster Groves, on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Private interment Oak Hill Cemetery.
