Dhimitri Zonia Obituary

Zonia, Dhimitri (James) At peace, in the hope of Christ's resurrection, Dhimitri (James) Zonia passed from this life on Monday January 11, 2016. Born in St. Louis to Ligori and Polyxena (Ruco) Zonia, he is preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Catherine (Thimio) Nicola, Alexandra (Michael) Shamia, and Anne (Angelo) Adams. Left to honor and cherish his memory are his wife Margaret Carolina (Wieland) Zonia, his daughters Margaret Zonia Morrison (Robert), Susan C. Zonia, Carolyn L. Zonia (Mark Messerly), and Laura E. Zonia, his grandsons Stefan Stommel Zonia (Theresa Sharkey), and Maxwell J. Morrison. Dhimitri and Margaret met while he served in the U.S. Army (Intelligence) in World War II, stationed outside Cambridge, England, where Margaret was born and raised. Their married life was lived in St. Louis, with Dhimitri working as a photoengraver at several places, including the Post-Dispatch, honing his skills and interests in art. From 1963 on, he worked as a professional artist, with exhibits and prizes won nationally and internationally, having his own studio where he taught many interested students. His work as an iconographer is part of the legacy he leaves us, including a number of Orthodox churches in the St. Louis area, together with the ceiling murals at Oak Grove Mausoleum. Dear husband, father, uncle, friend and teacher, you will be sorely missed. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the management and staff at Delmar Gardens Meramec Valley and Pathways for their love and kind care. Services: Visitation at Kutis Affton Funeral Home, 10151 Gravois, on Thursday January 14 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with Trisagion Prayers at 7:00 p.m. Service at Kutis on Friday January 15 at 10:00 a.m., with interment National Cemetery Jefferson Barracks. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to St. Thomas Romanian Orthodox Church, 6501 Nottingham Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63109.

My mother was a student of Dhimitri and this is a painting she created of him. I would like to gift it to any family member that is interested.

Our sincere condolences to Margaret and family. We have only just learnt of Dhimitri's passing.
We would dearly like to find out how Margaret is. Her Brother Michael in Bedford England would like to hear any news about her.
Kindest regards
