Collins, Tommy W. 81, of Elgin passed away Sunday, April 20, 2014 at Presence St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin. He was born May 7, 1932 in Elgin the son of Frederick and Evelyn Harms Collins. He had been a resident of the Elgin area all of his life and was a graduate of Elgin High School. He was employed by Shakeproof Division of Illinois Tool Works for 25 years before retiring. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of American Legion Post 57, Elgin, VFW Post 1307, Elgin and the Eagles Club Surviving are his daughter-in-law, Lisa Collins; 3 grandchildren, Amanda (Ulysses) Cortes, Katie Collins and Riley Collins; 2 great-grandchildren, Alysson and Kenadee. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Shawn Collins, and his brother, James R. Collins. Funeral Services will be held Friday, April 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Interment with honors will follow at Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Earlier this year Mr. Collins was a patient at Rosewood getting therapy. My father was there at the same time. They shared a table in the dining room. This gave me a chance to talk with Tommy--a very enjoyable experience.
