John LeRoy "Jack" Coates, Jr, 80, died Wednesday, May 23, 2012, in his residence.
He was a native of Erie, Pennsylvania and had been a resident of Sulphur for over 50 years. He had been the manager of Home Building Materials from 1957 to 1976, when he became the owner and operator until 2007. Jack enjoyed spending time on his farm working with his tractor and with his horses and cows, but especially enjoyed his family. He was a member of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church and was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his daughter, Sue Coates Gaudet and husband, Chris, of Sulphur; two sons, Jeff Coates and wife, Susanne, of Sulphur and Scott Coates and wife, Tammy, of Ruston; two sisters, Jean Nelson and Susan Tighe and husband, John; eight grandchildren, Chris Gaudet, Lee Gaudet, Garret Coates, Katie Gaudet Cain, Dillon Coates, Katey Coates Plummer, Kennedy Coates, and Jack Gaudet. He is preceded in death by his wife, May Dell Coates; his parents, Margaret and John L. Coates, Sr; and a sister, Nancy Coombs.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 25, in Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church. The Rev. Edward J. Richard, M.S. will officiate. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery South in Carlyss under the direction of Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Garret Coates, Dillon Coates, Chris Gaudet, Lee Gaudet, Jack Gaudet, Casey Plummer, and Dan Cain. Visitation was from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday with a rosary service at 6 p.m. and resumes Friday from 8 a.m. in the funeral home. The family asks that memorial donations be made to .
