HUGH ALAN DICK SUNBURY — Hugh Alan Dick, 58, of Centerburg, passed away Saturday morning, May 23, 2015 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 16, 1957 in Columbus to Edward and Judy (Giles) Dick. Hugh graduated from Centerburg High School in 1976. Hugh's life was dedicated to the service of others. He was actively involved in the Hilliard Township VFD for many years, at one time serving as Fire Chief. He was a former mayor of the Centerburg community. Retired as a paramedic and captain with the Delaware County EMS and flight medic on LifeFlight (Columbus and Wellston) where he was one of the first medics. He later served for many years and in many capacities as a deputy with the Delaware County Sheriff's Department. He was a state of Ohio EMS instructor for over 30 years and was instrumental in starting "Lessons Learned" — a training session for first responders for mass shootings which was a direct result of the Columbine incident. He also was a current OPOTA instructor. He enjoyed dining and traveling having been overseas several times including South America and Europe. His greatest love was hosting numerous international exchange students and forming bonds with them and the community. Due to this love, he also served as a regional director for NACEL Open Door and was dedicated to promoting international understanding and language education. In addition to his parents of Centerburg, he is also survived by four brothers, Steve (Sandy) Dick of Mt. Vernon, Matt (Staci) Dick of Delaware, Timmy Dick (partner Michael Dickinson) of Hilliard and Eric (Monica) Clarke of Upper Arlington; sister, Gina Oswalt (fiance Glenn Romanoski) of Mount Vernon; numerous nieces and nephews and an overwhelming host of friends including Sister Julie O'Stroske. He was preceded in death by a niece, Ava Hanna; maternal grandparents, Elizabeth and Elmer Giles; and paternal grandparents, Leila and Edwin Dick. The family will receive friends from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, May 28 at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 637 N. State Route 61, Sunbury. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 29, 2015 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 9633 E. State Route 37, Sunbury, with Fr. David Sizemore officiating. Burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery in Centerburg. A reception will immediately follow the burial at COJFD (Centerburg Fire House).
