Walter Kastler Grant Jr.
Walter Kastler Grant Jr. , 84, of Pascagoula, passed away Thursday, December 12, 2013.
Walter was born Feb 28, 1929 to Walter and Mildred Grant in New Orleans , LA. He attended Newman High School in New Orleans and graduated from Marion Military Institute in Marion, AL. Walter continued his education at the University of California, Berkeley and received degrees in Psychology and Mechanical Engineering from Tulane
University and was the President of Psi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Order. He served in the United States Navy
aboard the U.S.S. Mount McKinley during the Korean Conflict
. Mr. Grant and his young family moved to Pascagoula in 1966, where he worked as a Naval Liaison in the Program Office at Ingalls Shipbuilding for more than 30 years. During his employment at the Shipyard he received commendation for developing an important structural component for the Aegis Class Destroyer that is still being used today. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pascagoula for 47 years, where he served as a Deacon and taught Sunday School. Mr. Grant never lost his New Orleans beginning, loving the water and jazz. He lived his love for the water through his sailboat, and was a Charter Member of the Singing River Yacht Club .
He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister Betty Smith (Mrs Stanley Smith).
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Evelyn Harlan Grant of Pascagoula, MS; three sons, Dr. Walter K. "Kas" Grant III and his wife Ashley of Gulfport, MS, Dr. Douglas Harlan Grant and his wife Gina of Mobile, AL and John McLain Grant of Pascagoula; a sister, Mrs. Robert D. (Mary) Coyle of New Orleans , LA; three grandchildren, Olivia, Julia , and Adam Grant; numerous nieces, nephews , church family and a host of friends.
Visitation will be Monday, December 16, 2013 at O'Bryant -O'Keefe Funeral Home in Pascagoula from 6-8 pm. Funeral Service will be Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Pascagoula, MS at 11:00 am. Military Honors will conclude at Machpelah Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be W. Kas Grant, Doug Grant, John Grant, Adam Grant, Robert Coyle, and Scott Sullivan. Honorary pallbearers are nephews, Jack Harlan, Kirby Selman, and Deacons of First Baptist Church.
