Harold L. Holifield

Harold Lavern Holifield, 79 of Gautier, MS finished his race Friday, May 17, 2013 in Ocean Springs, MS.

Harold was born to Sherman and Grace Holifield on March 21, 1934 in Laurel, MS. He served in the United States Army and was a 34 year member of the First Baptist Church of Gautier. He married the love of his life Margie Rivers on September 25, 1959. Together this couple truly became as one. He enjoyed the simple things of life over extravagance, and preferred others needs before his own. He kept a log of the miles he walked after retiring as a contract officer for the US Navy and often commented how many times he had walked to California and back. He did not just live life he lived to make a difference in others. He had a deep love and devotion for his family and became the rock not only for the Holifield but for the Rivers family as well. Mr. Holifield was strong, steadfast, unshakable, and unmovable in his faith, his love, and his life. The void he left is great but, the example and heritage he leaves will not only live but will thrive.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister Voncile Powell and her husband Ed; sister in law, Shirley Langford and brother-in-law, George Rivers.

He is survived by his wife Margie Holifield of Gautier, MS ; a son , Scott Holifield of Gautier, MS ; a daughter, Jan Holifield Yarber of Ocean Springs, MS; a sister, Myrtis Adam and her husband Herbert of Pascagoula, MS; brother and sister -in-laws, Carolyn and Aaron Rogers of Waynesboro, MS and John and Maurice Rivers of Eillisville, MS; numerous nieces, nephews , and friends.

The visitation will be Tuesday May 21, 2013 from 10am til 12 noon at First Baptist Church of Gautier with funeral service to begin at noon. Interment with military honors will conclude at Pinecrest Cemetery in Gautier. Condolences may be expressed online at
