Richard "Dick" Thompson McGovern

September 1, 1929 - July 8, 2014


Richard "Dick" Thompson McGovern age 84 of Helena went to be with his Heavenly Father Monday, July 8, 2014. He was born September 1, 1929 in Old Lyme, Connecticut to the late John and Ellen McGovern. Besides his parents, Mr. McGovern is preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Agostinnelli McGovern; brother, John B. McGovern; sister, Alice Weaver, sister, Susie Sullivan; and father-in-law, James L. Alexander.

Mr. McGovern faithfully attended Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church in Pascagoula and was fondly known by his grandchildren as "Poppy". He previously worked as an Electrical Combat Systems Manager at Ingalls and bravely served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Navy. Mr. McGovern was a life member and past commander of the American Legion Post 160 in Pascagoula. He was also a life member of the VFW Post 3373. Mr. McGovern was an avid golfer. He enjoyed all things related to sports, especially watching the New Orleans Saints.

Mr. McGovern is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Alexander McGovern; daughter, Donna Washington (J. Marvin); daughter, Kathleen Lafleur; step-daughter, Tobie Nix; step-daughter, Elizabeth Simpkins (Wray); eleven grandchildren; and twelve great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m., Friday, July 11, 2014 at Holder-Wells Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pascagoula with Father Mike Kelleher officiating. The family will welcome friends at the church one hour prior to Mass.

Interment will follow at Crestlawn Cemetery in Ocean Springs.
