Jack Mitchell Womack

Jack Mitchell Womack, age 88, of Gautier died on Monday, April 1, 2013. Jack was born on February 15, 1925 and raised on his family's tobacco farm in Gadsden County Florida near Tallahassee. Jack graduated from Havana High School in 1941 and served in the U. S. Navy during WWII. He received an electrical engineering degree from Auburn University in 1948. After college, Jack worked for Carter Oil Company as a seismograph operator scouting oil deposits in the western United States. While stationed in Stamps, Arkansas Jack met and married Catherine Baker in 1950. Jack later worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Winston Salem, NC in technical support of the manufacture of Navy Radar equipment. He then moved to the Cavalier Corporation in Chattanooga, TN, where he designed electrical components of Coca Cola vending machines, receiving 2 patents for his designs. In 1963 Jack and his family moved to Pascagoula to begin work as an engineer in the Nuclear Power Division of Ingalls Shipbuilding, retiring in 1994.
In retirement Jack was very active in his church and community. He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Pascagoula having served in various official positions including Chairman of the Administrative Board, President of the Men's Club, Chairman of Trustees, and delegate to the Mississippi Methodist Annual Conference. He also was a past Chairman of the Secretariat for the South Mississippi Methodist Cursillo.
Jack was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Pascagoula, serving as president during 1972-1973. He was a long-term member of the Jackson County Historical and Genealogical Society and the Gautier Historic Preservation Commission which he served as Chairman from 2002 to 2008. During that time he researched, interviewed longtime residents, compiled, and edited "Gautier Mississippi: A Short History", available for check out or sale at the Gautier Library. Jack's service to his church and his community was motivated by his love for Christ and devotion to serving His people.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Grace Womack; one brother, Ernest Womack; and two sisters, Rebecca Gillem and Barbara Kennedy. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 63 years, Catherine Womack of Gautier; children Mike (Debbie) Womack of Greenwood, Indiana, Terri (Bob) Daspit of Knoxville, Tennessee; Richard (Susie) Womack of Gautier; foster sons Geoff and Jonathan Deuel; sisters Emily Powell of Tallahassee, Florida and Orien (Gerald) Thomas of Calvary, Georgia; 7 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and a large, loving extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins from all across the country.
Visitation will be on Friday, April 5, 2013 from 9 am until Noon at First United Methodist Church of Pascagoula. Funeral services will be at Noon at First United Methodist Church of Pascagoula.
