Geri Jacobs Obituary

GERI SUE STRAUS JACOBS Our beloved Susie lost her valiant struggle with ovarian cancer on Tuesday, July 23, 2013. At the end, she was at home, surrounded by family and friends. Susie's courage and incredible will to live have been an inspiration to everyone who knew her, cared for her, and loved her. Susie was a successful attorney at Jacobs & Straus, with her husband Paul. She was an active member of Temple Beth El, serving as Vice President. Susie was the "Go To" mom, whether as Class Mom or Team Mother. Susie had many accomplishments in her 53 years of life, but her greatest accomplishment was the loving environment she created at home where she and Paul raised Kirby and Sam. Susie lived life to the fullest and fit 48 hours into every single day. Susie would never say "no", to a client, friend or family member and made everyone feel special and loved. Susie had a wonderful sense of humor, was kind-hearted and always took the side of the underdog. Susie graduated from Miami Beach High in 1978, from University of Texas in 1982 and the University of Miami School of Law in 1985. She is survived by her loving husband Paul, her adoring children Kirby and Sam, her parents Edie and Arnie Straus, in-laws, Bunny and Abe Jacobs, sister, Robin (the late Dr Richard Furlong), brother, Skip (Donna), sisters-in-law Melissa (Alan), Baren and Andrea (Jeff) Greenberg, nephews and nieces, Jeffrey, Colleen, Daniel, Morgan, Stephanie, Jolie, Sara, Nathaniel, Sophie, great-nephew Ethan, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Services and entombment will be held at Temple Beth El, 333 S.W. 4th Avenue, Boca Raton, on Thursday July 25, 2013 at 2:00 PM. Donations may be made in Susie's name to Temple Beth El. Arrangements by Gutterman Warheit 561 997 9900.

Dear Paul and family:

My deepest, deepest condolences. I was so sad to hear that Susie had passed. My heart and prayers are with you. Always remember that just because she is gone it does not mean that she is not with you. She is in your children, in your memories, and always in your heart. You can always talk to her and you never know, when she may be listening. Just remember that when that breeze touches your face, a sharp memory that comes that fills your eyes with tears of joy, when you look at your children and see one of her expressions come across their face while they are talking to you. She is with you and will always be with you in your heart. Time heals as much as it hurts, but it does go on. Take care of yourself and your family. My deepest sympathies.

Dear Strauss Family ,I know that I am a friend from times long ago, but I wanted to tell you all how very sorry I am for your loss. I saw Susie for the first time in +20yrs shortly before she was diagnosed. I had forgotten how funny and vivacious Susie was and enjoyed our visit immensley. I followed her amazing blog, hoping that she might write a book one day. She obviously loved life and had wonderful insight. She left way too early, again, I am so very sorry. I will always think of her with a smile in my heart.

To the whole Straus family, we express our prayers and condolences for the loss of Susie. I will never forget seeing her last when our Dad was sick. She was only positive for us and never let on to her own struggles. My Dad was so proud of Susie and the rest of the Straus family cousins. Our prayersgo out from the West Coast Wechslers

Dear Edie, Arnie, Robin and Skippy,
I am just heartbroken for all of you and your unfathomable loss. We in my family, have suffered two such losses within the past year with the passing of two 50 year old sons-in-law - so incredible-, so when I say I know the depth of your grief, it is surely so.
Arnie, we first met when I was 7 and you were an older guy of 12 or so. Who could have guessed that such sadness would ever come into such happy lives.
I picture the Laszlo, Grossman and Straus kids running in and out of one another's houses on Coronado Terrace. No one could ever have predicted the loss of any one of them.
Please know that Stan and I are thinking about you more than you can imagine and pray that somehow you'll get through this nightmare.
I wish you love, strength, and wonderful undying memories of beautiful Susie.
Love, Joan Kandel Worton

Dear Edie, Arnie, Paul, Kirby, Sam, Skip and Robin,

Your California Cousins, the Schwartz Family (Suzanne, Mark, Lisa, Bobby, Karen, and Ben) are deeply saddened by the news of Susie's passing. It was only eight months ago that we sat with Edie and Arnold at the hospital where Susie had been receiving her cancer treatments hoping that Cousin Lou would pull through. At that time, we had thought and prayed that her cancer was in remission. Reading the wonderful tributes and obituaries about Susie must make you feel proud about the extraordinary person she was as a spouse, mother, sibling, daughter, lawyer, involved Temple member. She led a caring life. May her memory be for a blessing. Gone too soon.

Dear Paul,
I am in shock... I just found out this moment about Susie's passing, and my heart goes out to you and the family. I would have definitely been to the service yesterday to pay my respects to Susie if I had known. I will always treasure the years we worked/shared offices in Boca Raton. Those were memorable years, and Susie was always part of the fun times. She always had a smile on her face and was so kind to everyone…. But, I will never forget, until the day I die, the gift Susie gave me…. It was October, 2003, and my oldest son had just graduated high school, joined the US Navy, and was stationed somewhere off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower…. Susie knew how nervous I was, and she knew I still had my younger son at home with me. He was 15 yrs. old at the time, and Susie knew how much my boys (and I) love the New York Yankees. She came into my office early the afternoon of October 21st, and surprised me with 2 tickets for Game 3 of the World Series that night in Miami. I was floored and couldn't wait to get home to surprise him. When he came home from school and I showed him the two tickets, well, you can just imagine the scene…. a kid being handed one of the best gifts of his life. The two of us were jumping and dancing all around the house!! Neither of us will ever forget that night …. we still talk about it to this day. All the great players were on the field back then… Mussina, Soriano, Matsui, Jeter, Williams and of course, Mariano. There was a slight rain delay, and that gave us the opportunity to sit behind home plate because most of the fans cleared out…. we had one of THE best times ever, just the two of us … Susie gave us that gift.
Her legacy will live on in all the good memories she left for a lot of people. All those who knew her were lucky. My prayers are with you. Fondly, Lori Ostrowski

Dear Staus Family,

Cathy shared Susie's obituary with me and to say I was shocked and terribly saddened is a gross understatement. First, let me express my truest sympathies for your loss and hope that memories of her goodness and exceptional sense of humor will endure forever and be of consolation to you.

It's been an awfully long time since we last spoke but seeing her picture and thinking back to the early 80's (when we were all wearing white pants and white shoes - without socks of course) brings back such fond memories. I have no doubt that she went on to be a trusted and respected lawyer and wonderful mother and wife.

I'm blessed to have known her and shared good times with her and your family. You were very kind to me and I will always remember Susie and your family fondly.

With Love,

To Susie's entire family,
Your loss is great and Susie was truly one of those special people. I hope you will find comfort in the many stories people will write and share about how she helped others.

Thanks to Susie, I found my way to Temple Beth El. Her dear friend and mine, Nina Chepp put us together. She was the first person to tell me about the synagogue and what a great community. Thanks to her, our family got to experience the great community of TBE.
In addition to the Nina connection, we found many Jewish Geography connections from the Beach and from south Broward. These connections made us always feel just a little bit more connected when we saw each other at synagogue or around Boca. I will always remember the family at Sam's Confirmation and then leaving to celebrate Kirby's graduation. I know Susie showed great strength in making that special day meaningful even as she had just learned about her disease.

Also her blogs where wonderful and helped me often appreciate the little things in life. My day usually stared with both laughter and some tears as I read her wonderful words of humor, strength, love and of course all that food!

Skip, you may remember me as Hal Rosenberg's sister and from DPHDS. I know and appreciate the pain you are going through. A close sibling relationship is rare and very special. Thank you for all that you have done to help Amy and her family.

I will look to give you a special hug over these next few days.

The entire Unger Family sends their love and wishes you strength.

I can't stop thinking about Susie and wish my sincere condolences to the entire extended family, friends, and Boca community. Although in recent years Susie and I kept in touch through facebook and her blogs, we have so many connections. Our grandmothers were best friends, our moms went to school together, she grew up down the street from my cousins, and we both attended Beth Sholom, Beach High and the University of Texas. She was always fun to be around and had a big smile on her face.

Susie will never truly leave us…she will live on in the kindness she showed, the comfort she shared, and the love she brought into our lives.

Arnie, Edie, Skippy and Robin,

I am in Budapest and learned yesterday of Susie's passing from my cousin, Marcelle. I am absolutely stunned and have been consumed thinking about you and your grief and so much of the long-ago past from Keystone Point where Susie and the rest of us on Coronado Terrace enjoyed such a great childhood together. I remember Susie (and you and "us all") from those days so well. I see her picture now and how beautiful she grew to be as a woman. I am so, so sorry for your tremendous loss. I wish you all the best and fortitude. Thinking of you with much sadness. My sincerest condolences, Andy Laszlo

My friendship with Susie began 45 years ago and will forever encompass a huge part of my heart. She made me a part of the Straus/Jacobs clan and I always felt like a member of the family. There's no way to describe how missed she will be but her legacy, love, humor, compassion, and wit will live on in Kirby and Sam - and that is an amazing gift! My deepest condolences to Paul, Kirby, Sam, Arnie and Edie, Skip, Robin and the entire family!
