Cavallo, Guido A.
Cavallo, Guido, 95, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2016. A long-time school teacher and wrestling coach, he will be missed by many whose lives he touched and influenced. He was born in East Weymouth, Massachusetts, one of ten children. He was a high school football star who moved to Washington, DC to study at the George Washington University. While there, World War II broke out and he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. After the war ended, he received an honorable discharge and returned to school, where he met his future wife, Delores Hastings. After graduating with a Master's Degree, he began teaching American History and Psychology in 1957 at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Virginia. A few years later, he became junior varsity wrestling coach and, shortly thereafter, varsity wrestling coach. During the more than 20 years that he was coach, his teams never had a losing record. And he produced many district, regional, and state champions. Recently, he was inducted into the East Weymouth High School Hall of Fame for his own athletic achievements and onto the Washington-Lee High School Athletic Wall of Fame for his coaching prowess. After retiring from teaching and coaching, he continued his interest in athletics by becoming a competitive golfer and softball player. He won many amateur golf tournaments, including local and state Senior Olympics tournaments. He often shot his age or better and had 4 holes in ones. His greatest achievement was placing third in the country in the National Senior Olympics Games in his age group. He is survived by his daughter, Trudy, of Boca Raton, FL, his son, Guy, of Annapolis, MD, many nieces and nephews, and 3 grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, October 2nd from 4-7 PM at the Babione Funeral Home at 1100 N. Federal Highway in Boca Raton, FL. Interment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
