Robert Hittel

Robert Hittel, age 90, of Fort Lauderdale, passed away on July 14, 2013. He was a licensed general contractor in the State of Florida from 1952 until his retirement in 2004. Robert Hittel Inc. performed work in Florida as a residential, commercial and industrial construction company. He served 18 years as a board member, Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals, governing body for building code. He was a qualified consultant appraiser-D.O.T. and qualified consultant appraiser-Broward County, specializing in construction costs. Bob was a Senior Member of American Society of Appraisers specializing in building values and rare books. He was a charter member of the Fort Lauderdale Chapter of Junto, a professional business organization founded by Benjamin Franklin, and held numerous officers' roles. He was born July 20,1922 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Wendel Hittel and Katherine Steinmetz Hittel. Bob was a World War II veteran who honorably served in the United States Army Air Corps, 381st Bomb Group as a B-17 tail-gunner in the European Theater of Operations. He was shot down over Germany and spent 13 months in Stalag Luft IV POW camp located in Gross-Tychow, Pomerania before being liberated at war's end. He graduated from Ohio Mechanic Institute specializing in architectural drafting and worked as a draftsman and general contractor in Ohio before moving to Fort Lauderdale with his wife, Patricia Kitchen. He earned his A.A. Degree in English from Broward Community College in 1979 and in 2002 graduated magna cum laude from Florida Atlantic University with a B.A. in English. His wife, Patricia, son, Jack, and sister, Matilda Feldman preceded him in death. He is survived by his brother, Frank, sons Robert A. and Chris, daughter, Kathleen O'Connor and ten grandchildren, Patrick O'Connor and Jackie, Christopher, Jeremy, Ryan, Madeline, Nicole, John, Matthew and Kathleen Hittel, as well as nephew and niece, Tim and Linda Hittel, nephew Gary Feldman and grandniece Alisha Fugazzi and great-grandniece Maddi Fugazzi. A celebration of life will be held July 27, from 2-4pm, at his son Robert's home in Fort Lauderdale, for family and friends. robhittel@yahoo.com Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.
