Carmen was one of the school's 10 National Merit Scholar semifinalists.
According to the Sun-Sentinel, she was also a piano student.
The Miami Herald quoted a social media post by a friend: "Rest In Peace Carmen Schentrup, your family is forever in my thoughts and prayers."
Legacy mourns all those who died at Stoneman Douglas.

My heartfelt condolences in the passing of Carmen. Please find comfort in the words found at Isaiah 65:17, "For look! I am creating new heavens and a new earth; And the former things will not be called to mind, Nor will they come up into the heart." God will make the earth new by restoring it back to paradise. During this time the bad things that people experienced (such as the violent shooting at Marjory Stoneman) will not remain on people's hearts and minds. Carmen and her classmates (those killed) will be restored to life in paradise.

Dear Schentrup family, My heart goes out to you for the loss of your precious daughter. Our children are a gift from God, and from the photos it can be seen how much you love Carmen and what a happy life you provided for her. How well you took care of that precious gift! God understands and feels your pain also - His own Son died a violent undeserved death so that we may all have the hope of everlasting life when His Kingdom comes and His will is done on earth, as it is in heaven. My heart breaks for the loss of Carmen and for the pain her family is suffering. Looking through the pictures I believe I recognize Robert Schentrup who could be Carmen's grandfather. The Schentrup family, Roberts parents, from Evansville Indiana, sponsored my parents to come to the US from a displaced persons camp in Germany after the 2nd WW. i Live in the neighborhood of East Pembroke Pines and saw a post that our local elementary school principal had lost a loved one at MSD High School. I'm not related nor friends of your family but in looking at your family photos it reminds me that your family is similar to my family so I can't imagine the depth of your loss. I will always remember seeing Carmen's shining smile every day at lunch from across the cafeteria at Hollywood Central. I was so impressed when I heard she skipped a grade and was even more amazed to find out that she was a National Merit Finalist. She would have done many other great things.
